Wouldn't know. There are very few places south of the 45th parallel that my wife or I like to vacation to repeatedly. Bay area is about the only one.

I would say compromise is the key. Last year my wife conceded to staying in Slovakia a week longer than she wanted and I saw that my inlaws were getting on her tits, and it sucked because I lack the language skills to tell anyone but her brother to back off of her and let her enjoy her vacation. Thus I promised her this year we'd do more towards her comfort zone in time spent there and activities.

Thus, our Vegas trip this summer is going to be a bit shorter and focused more on the shows she wants to see--since it will be her first time in Vegas. Later on my inlaws are planning to visit and I made it 100% clear with my brother in law that while we have no problem showing them what they want to see (Oregon vortex, etc.) that they're in our turf now and they're not allowed to get on her tits about minutae--I'm American and they will bow to my superior bastardry. :)

These are just one of the cottage rental places in Nags Head NC. Ocean front, near the pier if you like pier fishing. Some cool historic things to go and see around Nags Head and in Manteo. We always end up going to Jockeys ridge (I giant sand dune) and flying kites or just rolling down the big sand hills. Beaches are really nice, clean, and not terrible crowded. There is the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo if you like that sort of thing. It's similar to the garden part of the Biltmore Estate.

BTW, when we first met my daughter we took her to Biltmore. She was born a mountain girl.

The rule of thumb is whomever is paying for the trip gets to decide where it takes place. HHM, are you paying? Is your wife paying? Or are you splitting?

Technically true but I'm just talking common sense here. If the husband is the bread winner, he should be the ultimate decision maker when it comes to family vacations. That's how my dad did it and my mom was just appreciate to go somewhere on a trip. I think it's pretty crappy if the husband has the 8 to 5 and then the wife is bitching about how she doesn't like his idea of a vacation. I don't get that.

I don't see any family vacation threads stickied, so sorry if this sort of thing has already been posted in the bar, but here goes...

My wife and I are in a HUGE argument about our Summer vacation destination and it's barely Spring!

She's never been to the biltmore estate even though she spent her youth years in South Carolina, and she thinks the Blue Ridge Mountains would be fun for the little ones to see.

I've never been myself, only seen that big ass house in that Hannibal movie, and thought it was pretty cool.

But I'm more of a beach guy when it comes to a vacay destination this year, plus I"m kind of conservative and heard that Asheville is really liberal so it might get on my nerves. I thought maybe we could try to meet halfway visiting Biltmore on our way back home (this will be a road triop)

But I have NO idea what a good value would be for a beach rental (I definitely need Air Conditioning because I heard it gets really sweaty hot down there)

Any good recommendations on beach destinations in NC???

This might just save my marriage guys. Looking forward to any good suggestions (not troll suggestions, douche)

Thanks!

Types this as presently on spring break family vacation and already 3 arguments since Monday!

I'm flying to Hilton head to buy a car at the end of the month and driving it back to Chicago. Going to spend the night in Asheville and then finish the drive the next morning hitting up th TAil Of The Dragon

Will chime back in after.

My immediate concern, like any vacation, is running out of shit to do

If you were married and had the kids I have mom staying home with you would maybe get it.

I've driven the dragon, beautiful area but certainly takes a back seat to the San Juan mountains. If only Chicago wasn't so centrally located, so as not to waste time driving through boring shitty states(Indiana, Iowa)to get to the nicer ones. :)

Shit, that's RIGHT! I forgot that he lives in NC!!! I bet he would have some good recommendations too! I'd PM him but I don't think is box is set up for that...

What about NCChifan? does he have an inbox? I'll check. Thanks for jogging my memory Scoot.

Yea, what do you want to know? I live, literally 5 min from the entrance to the Biltmore House and MY wife is a beach bum. Honestly, we tend to beach in SC more than NC. You have to be a more or less dedicated, I want a beach more than anything else, kind of person to do NC beaches. Now SC, Myrtle Beach has great golfing and a lot of things to do with the little tikes. If they're a tad older than I might suggest Hilton Head Island.

As far as Asheville, while it has a large progressive crowd in town, it is surrounded by conservatives so it isn't too crazy. What the progressives did bring was great dinning spots, and a metric ton of breweries. We have a few great ones, some are even kid friendly. Anyway, there is a lot to do in Asheville, you could take the kids up to the top of the highest peak east of the Mississippi river, Mt. Mitchell. There is Chimney Rock State Park as well. Cades cove near Asheville towards Gatlinburg, TN (bout 45 min). You can scoot down a river on a raft, I would suggest the Nantahala again about 45 min away, also right near it is the Joyce Kilmer National Forest, one of the last old growth forests left on the East Coast, real cool.
