I think someone mentioned it briefly in another article over the weekend.

My take: I wouldn't sacrifice a guys arm talent in order to improve his release by a few milliseconds. How about just doing a better job protecting him, give him more weapons to work with and a real American offensive system?

These "unnamed execs" love to nit pick and have opposing teams running around in circles.

This was a concern Chris Simms talked about last year during the draft process and something he will need to work on over the next few offseasons.

IMO, it’s really not that big of a deal because it isn’t super slow or anything like some QBs that come out. In the meantime, an improved offensive line and receiving core will help mask it.

I think that we all should think that his protection needs to be improved and they can work on improving his mechanics so long as it doesn't screw up his mechanics.

I think that all QBs should constantly be working on improving their games in the offseason. Fields should work on improving his mechanics along with other things (like reading a defense quickly). Everything that he can improve on will make him a better QB.

The ROI on this is tiny. Risk and waste of his mental processing when he has a new offense, new OL, and new WRs to acclimate to. It's like worrying about a scratch on the paint right before the race when car needs new tires, driver, and oil. Hit this topic later IF needed at all. So far down the priority list ATM.

Let him work on it at his own speed in offseason programs at his choosing. Goddamn he is a talented player and his success isnt going to be determined on the fractions of a second that his release can be improved.

That isnt to say that it is not somethign that can help him succeed, but the line and his receivers, the coaches around him, and developing his mind as a young QB that will determine his success.

Fields has more longer routes down the field to throw to and thus he takes more time to throw. It's not all elongated just deep.

It's elongated but not drastically so. How much gets worked over and how well has a great deal to do with the coach being able to integrate the new into the natural so that the player owns it and doesn't revert under pressure etc. Lots of reps.

Rex had one of the quickest releases in the league. The nerfs were for deciding when to throw and dealing with pressure.

Aaron Rodgers improved his throwing motion when he came into the league and it didn't seem to affect his accuracy much if at all.

I just hope Fields works on ball security, pocket awareness and his mental clock as well....

If they try to fix the throwing motion gradually over a few seasons, he will be fine, and it should benefit him. If they try to make drastic changes to his motion, it could mess him up.

Kerry Collins was the last one I remember with a big hitch in his delivery and IMO he has a faster delivery than Fields

It needs to be changed. Slow reads plus slow delivery is going to get him killed over his career. He needs to speed things up. Arm strength is a non issue so a few less mph on the throws is no big deal if he cuts down the delivery time.

I talked a lot about this after the draft so much that it made me seem like a hater (which I'm not).

His arm motion is similar to Carson Wentz. When he really rips it, in his setup his hand is below his elbow. That motion takes a bit longer to release, but it also puts the ball in a risky spot because pass rushers can swipe at the ball causing a fumble.

What makes this motion worse for Fields is that he has relatively small hands. They are 9 1/8 inches, which is on the small side.

What further compounds this is Fields style. He's not like Drew Brees or Tom Brady where they get the ball out very quickly. He uses his athletic ability to buy time.

Each one of these items individually aren't too bad, but the combination of things could be costly.

Buying time + longer arm motion + smaller hands = turnovers.

Personally I see a lot of Carson Wentz in Justin Fields. That comment goes both ways. Not too long ago Wentz was playing MVP caliber ball, so try not to read that as strictly negative. BOth look to extend plays, have longer throwing motions and have a bit of a turnover issue. With that being said, the largest current problem with Wentz is that he's not that coachable and wanting to do things 'his way'. I don't see that in Fields, so if you get all the positives of Wentz and the ability to remove the bad, there's an amazing QB.
