Okay, so help me out.

What's step one for this show? S1E1, or is there some kind of book/graphic novel/other show that a person needs to get into it first?

I never watched it. When it aired, I was in a mode of constant deployment, and finally have some time to throw it up on a TV next to me while I do some work. Just wanted to ask so I can give it a fair shake and not start somewhere that screws the whole experience up for me.

The OC kinda reminds me of Mr Robot.

Everything I know about the OC comes from Dear Sister and this:

Anyways, I have the whole Firefly show queued up, so in in all seriousness, am I ready to just watch it, or again, is there required viewing/reading?

Start from S01E01.... but be warned, it is an awesome Syfy show but it has no formal ending on TV, it just wraps up with a regular episode and they got cancelled.

Then you will need to watch the movie to basically see the majority of the vision of the story end to end which I am guessing would have taken 5-6 seasons, but was condensed into ~2 hours.

First episode is a long pilot that intros you to the whole setting of the story, fun fact, they didnt air the pilot on TV for some reason.... they started with Train Job, the 2nd episode lol.

Seems like Fox wanted Firefly to fail.

Thank you good sir.

It's ranked so high in the sci-fi sphere, almost TNG level. Figure it's a must-see for any nerd. But then again, I think Lexx is a must see. Ahh, whatever, hitting play and just doing it.

Lexx was awesome. Kinda reminded me of the Real World though.

When SciFi channel was good, Friday nights had Farscape followed by Lexx. The former was cool because there was such a social media backlash when it was canceled, they agreed to condense the would-be last season into a mini-series (The Peacekeeper Wars) to wrap things up. Doubt we'll see practical effects like that ever again, but who knows? Maybe Disney will start a thing with by going more practical and less CGI with The Force Awakens...

Man...I forgot all about Lexx. Netflix needs to add that to their streaming site.

Okay, so I have 8 episodes in of Firefly.

It's a good show, but it's sci-fi light. Basically, I see the very light hints of sci-fi as a way to fool people into watching a loose colonial period drama. I just don't see it as a 9.2/10(IMDB) show. Don't get me wrong, because it's still good, but way way way over-rated at anything above an 8.2. I would give it a 7.3 at this point, but I still have a few eps left.

The show is set in space, on a spaceship that travels between planets... idk how you can make something more sci-fi?

It was a blend of basically a Western and sci-fi... and the characters are all enjoyable.... Nathan Fillion is both bad ass and hilarious.

To each their own of course, but give the movie a run when you get done with the TV episodes... you get to see where the story was headed, I think it would have made for some interesting TV seasons.

This just is a case of not being able to be honest. I said I like the show(and I do), but even the most mild criticizing is sacrilegious(which happens with vastly over-rated things). The setting being in space on a ship is the only thing that isn't colonial about the whole show(well, up to episode 9 that I have seen). So you can basically replace Serenity with a sea-voyaging merchant vessel traveling between isles, and poof, it's a full on colonial.

I probably wouldn't have watched it if it weren't a colonial, so trick or not, I'm glad I started watching it. Plus it's oddly curious (or perverted) to watch a young Christina Hendricks make spot appearances in very conservative clothing, knowing full well that they are hiding watermelons behind the curtains.

No network really wants to see a show fail, because ratings=sponsor revenue.
It was just poor planning by the execs from day 1. If Firefly was launched today, it would probably live on a network that would allow the show to try and get the narrative correct, rather than some empty suit dictating the program schedule.

I liked Firefly much better than Battlestar Galactica (I liked BG as well), because they did a very good job slowly developing the characters.
What could've been...

Isn't syfi supposed to be like this though? I mean, like historical or societal conflicts, mythologies, or philosophical thesis are played out on a space ship?

That's why I call it sci-fi light. A good sci-fi has compounding actions that range from subtle to extreme(but only extreme after the events develop). A light sci-fi merely replaces one relateable element with another. Firefly at best as a sci-fi subgenre has spacepunk elements. And again, it's still a VERY GOOD show.

When I think true to the genre sci-fi, I think Asimov. Where human traits exist enough to relate with the characters and problems at bay, but the rest is a logical conclusion of the imagination based on what could be, or couldn't be but seems plausible under a fictional universe. Remove the logical conclusion and you are left with fantasy.

Firefly is sci-fi light. More period drama than sci.

I haven't seen firefly. Love Asimov but don't know of any shows that came from his writing. As far as sci-fi movies, I like stuff that kubrick and Gilliam did, and blade runner, so pretty short list I guess. Shows? Most seem like the lite category I guess. BG was pretty good. Liked Lexx but it was campy.
