He’s had a top 10 scoring defense 4/7 seasons between IND and CHI and it’s not like he had a ton of star power at either spot. He didn’t. I’d say that’s pretty good.

Absolutely terrible HC, but he’s very good DC.
But the coaching staff was fired. Also played in weakest division in NFL at the time. Never made the playoffs. It’s truly sad.

Was the coaching staff fired over the defense or……?

He was DC in Indy and did his job well with not a lot of talent on that side of the ball.

Because the division was shit. It skews the numbers. He did have Leonard Williams in the roster. But his defenses have difficulty getting off the field irregardless about points. That means less touches for his offense.

Something tells me ownership isn't going to tie the GM's hands as much as they have the last few searches. Poles got his pick of qb and now he more or less gets his pick of hc. After next year there will really be no excuses.

That's the vibe I get from the McCaskey Bears.

They appoint experienced Fox and Flus to look over rookie GMs. After that fails the GM gets their chance to have more say.

What I don't like about it this time is how much Poles defended Flus. If he was doing that for the boss he could continue to be a yes man for the boss. Or he's just really stupid and lets other things get in the way of him doing a GM's job of managing personnel (and we know this is true with VJJ).

Think you mean DeForest Buckner.

FWIW, the bears STRUGGLING defense ranks 9th in points currently. I think people saying Flus isn’t a good DC really shows how emotions could skew fans perceptions when it comes to someone they don’t like.

Olin, Brown, Briggs and countless other players have all said Flus is a good DC. The problem is, he’s a terrible HC. This is why being a good coordinator doesn’t necessarily mean you’re HC material. There are other more important traits required for the job. Hopefully the bears hire someone with those traits.

Any GM knows not defending the current HC publicly would only alienate ownership as well as the next round of candidates. Pointing blame publicly before a decision has been made is just bush league.

Yeah, Eberflus was fairly tone deaf in his speeches.

Ok after reading all of this, I rescind my preference to wait until after the year to fire Flus. Firing him was probably best for his own safety as sounds like JJ or another player would have murdered him if he had stayed. LMFAO!

Also was very frustrating to read that Waldron threw out the run scheme with Chris Morgan as I get the feeling that was a huge reason why they even kept him on staff. So disfunction from the start. Dumb.

I just go back to I wanted Flus gone this past offseason when they knew they were going to draft Williams. It would have been the first time since fucking Cade McKown that the Bears would have matched a rookie QB with a new HC. They had already proven time and time again that holding onto the HC for another year or 2 doesn't work.

Also lol at everyone bitching about Chris Morgan when apparently Waldron fucked him over by removing his run scheme.

That still doesn't explain the pass pro and the number of times that OL have literally blocked air on his watch as they just stare straight ahead and completely miss blocking assignments to their sides.

No I think dumb players doing dumb things explains Borom deciding not to block a DE.

It kinda does with Waldron going for a complicated passing scheme. He didn’t slowly install it. Just jump right in with a new team and rookie QB.

That's certainly a part of it. But, it has happened at center and guard too. The other really 'famous' one being Mustipher.

I don't know, I'm not going to pretend to be any sort of OL coaching guru. It just seems like the Bears really struggle with blocking assignments at times and their communication along the line. Like at the beginning of the season when they could not pick up a stunt, etc.

It'll be an interesting question for any HC candidate: Who is your preferred OL coach and what is their background to think they will be successful?

He was an OL coach for a team that made a SB and had Asst OL coach for another SB team. So did he coach those teams better or did he simply have better and smarter players?

The catch 22. Bears kick got blocked so Flus should have run one more play. Raiders ran one more play and fumbled so Pierce should have kicked.
