Now grade their Availability.
Zeitler and Pryor both went for 1000+ snaps and would be dramatically cheaper.

I guess my question with Smith is if you’re going to make him the highest paid guard in the league are you really getting that level of play? And if not….. is it worth it because as you correctly point out he is available all the time?

Pryor lol.

I’m perfectly fine signing Zeitler. He’s also 35. How long does he play well for? Between Zietler and Smith, the arrow is only pointing up for one of them…

One player is a short term solution and one a long term solution.

Agreed. He doesn't play like a 22M/yr guard. Desperation fuels poor decisions which results in a poor team.

Mahomes was already restructured 2x actually. Really nothing more than can do with his contract cause the NFLPA will lose their shit. They do NOT want any Bobby Bonilla or Shoie Ohtani type contracts...

Chiefs went all in for the 3 Peat. Now it's time to pay the Cap Man...
The NFL doesnt allowed deferred money the way MLB does so no risk of Bonilla or Otani contracts. As long as Mahones has base salary that exceeds the vet minimum they can still restructure. His contract runs to 2031 and cap hits starting in 2028 are 33, 35, 45.5 and 48.3 compared to cap hits in the 65m range the next 3 years. So if they want they can convert base salary into SB and reduce the 65m cap hits next 3 years and increase the 2028 and beyond cap hits as by then you may be looking at 70m-80m a year QBs.

Does every position have to have a long term solution?

What about Pryor plus a rookie in round 2 or 3? Pryor serves as insurance.

What about Zeitler for a year and use the extra money for a DE or DT?

I’m not really pushing one or the other. I’m just pointing out people are obsessed with Smith and are going to freak out if he isn’t signed…. When I think there are other legit options as well.

The good thing is I think our new OL coach has enough skins on the wall that hopefully the teams player evals are improved.

No but Jesus one of the 5 should be at least, no??

We aren’t talking about every position, like what?? Like I said I’d be cool with Zeitler too. They juts have to do something significant.

Also Robert Hunt signed a monster FA deal with Car last year and his PFF was 67.

Smith will be overpaid, he would have looked much worse if he played on the bears last year with caleb eating sacks every sunday

I also dont expect to get both dalman AND smith. When is the last time the bears got 1 top FA at their position, much less two?

Most of the bears fans who want smith watched him for maybe one or two games and saw a PFF grade

He's good, but he's not market setting good, and its what he's going to get.

That contract is likely to look bad. Then again, im not sure what the other solution is. Maybe zeitler since he would cost like 8-10m?

Edmunds unfortunately.

But it's not just the Bears, there are 32 other team, any single team getting two top FAs is very unlikely.

Neither does Robert Hunt. You are paying for his youth, durability and consistency. Not necessarily because he is the best. He allows you to hopefully forget about RG for the next 5 years and you have no one else making big money on the OL at the moment.

Really the question you should ask is who are you willing to pay big money too on the OL. Smith, Wright or Jones. We have no other young OL so by the time any draftee is ready to be paid a big contract for any of those 3 are ending or already ended. No issue have 2 of 5 OL making around 20m.

Among those 3 I probably paying Wright and Smith. Let Jones walk if his contract is 17m or more. Sign Zietler to be the stop gap for while you draft OL the next 2 years.

It's cold blooded how teams can just manipulate a guy's career. I guess he can try and force his way out if hes really upset.
It’s so terrible he can only get ~32 million dollars to play another season with the team that drafted him…

Bullshit. CCS told me the Chiefs are holding onto Smith because they can just abra-cadabra the salary cap by restructuring and converting salaries to bonuses. Unlimited money glitch!

Yeah there's a lot of buildup for a non-eliteplayer like Smith, and it's kinda boring. But imo, the Bears should come away with 3 new starters on the OL this offseason. Ideally two FAs and one rookie.

Here's the other important thing with Smith. I feel like he has a high floor as a player, as opposed to many other FA options at OG this year.

I agreee, it just rarely happens and somehow bears fans expect us to sign a bunch of the top FA's.

There are a ton of teams with cap space, and some of them have better teams than the bears.

If we get one of the top FA OL i'll be thrilled lol

I would add that it's completely on-par with how businesses work.

People make the mistake of thinking the teams are the employers. No. The NFL are the employers.

Think of the teams as divisions of a company, and the NFL as the company.

You want to move to a division in Dallas from your division in Chicago? Sorry, you'll need an agreement between the Chicago office and the Dallas office to make that happen, and it'll need to be blessed by the company. I can't just go work for my company's Dallas office because I feel like it or because the Dallas office wants me.

They have let plenty of players walk via FA

Correct. They didn't just re-sign everyone over the years while pulling "Get out of Salary Cap free" cards out of their assholes like casuals think they can.
