I still think the "low-ball" offer to Lester from Boston is them posturing, feeling like Henry Owens and Anthony Ranaudo will be able to come in early and fill a void in the starting rotation. The Sox have plenty of arms who should be getting cups of coffee this year. Their infatuation with Sandoval leads me to believe that they'd rather have Xander Bogaerts take all of his reps at shortstop, where his bat projects more favorably.

Hanley Ramirez will go to Boston on Monday to finalize a deal with the Red Sox in the five-year, $90MM range, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter links). Reports emerged this afternoon indicating that the Red Sox were in hot pursuit of Ramirez.

There's some last minute "not so fast" stuff going on but it really does look like both Ramirez and Sandoval will sign with Boston if not today certainly before the holiday and you're talking a total of $180 million right there. That's a lot of coin which is leading a lot of Red Sox media and fans wondering if they're now "out" on Lester. I wouldn't be so sure although the Tweet from Ken Rosenthal yesterday saying that six teams were now in on Lester sounds like an agent getting worried that a key player may not be a key as he thought in negotiations. I seriously doubt there are six teams with the wherewithal or money to sign Lester although I'm not counting Boston out and St. Louis could come up with that cash if they were motivated and I guarantee you they're not thrilled about the prospect of Lester in a Cubs uniform, maybe not worried for this year but for the couple after that when they Cubs look to be their competition in the Central.
