Cause were all bandwagon fans

Still going with that, eh? Everyone was a bandwagon fan at some point.

Bears forum is a beast.... one which feeds on internet rage....

I'm kind of torn here. I'd love to have as many people in here talking Hawks hockey as are raging about Bears football. But I also enjoy the fact that we can have, for the most part, intelligent and civil discussions about what's going on each game. I've had tons of good chats in here since the playoffs began.

As much as I love the Bears, they will never be a dominating force like the Hawks. With Stan Bowman making all of the Hawks' prospect decisions, this team will make playoffs for the next 20 years. And who the hell would rather watch baseball (regular season Cubs baseball) over playoff hockey? I dont understand how watching/playing hockey can be so generally unpopular as it is in Chicago. Im out here in Cali and hockey players are almost as common to see as soccer and baseball players. Maybe there will be a Toews effect like Gretzky in L.A.

I think the generation that I grew up in completely missed out on hockey due to the Hawks fading into relative anonymity in the late 90s and early 2000s. They were so goddam bad during that time and, to make matters even worse, the NHL as a whole suffered from limited exposure in the media. Then the 2005 lockout only made things worse.

But I think you're going to see that change heavily in the next 10-15 years. Kids tend to be a fairweather fan base and you can bet that the Hawks bandwagon is only going to get bigger with each deep postseason run they have. I also think that having John McDonough on board in the front office means the Hawks popularity will only continue. He got people to go to Cubs games for years when that team wasn't winning a thing. Imagine what he can do with the budding dynasty he's working for now.

I don't think the Hawks will ever surpass the Bears because of the NFL's stranglehold on the sports scene in America. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Hawks were the 2nd most popular team in town by 2020.

There's times I think that, our generation range missed out... Then I remember having 1-2 friends in all middle school who talked hockey with me, then a small but larger group in a huge high school.

A bunch of us would play pond hockey and a couple were on the local team, but mostly nobody cares about the hawks. Some of my best friends cared and still care about the Wolves more.

Hell the reason I stuck to this forum was the hockey bit, the bears forum I was at had an attempted hockey board during the '10 run, with about 4 people. That's the view of bears fans looking in. this place has waned and waxed but provides good outlaying of hawks chatter that was missing for too long.

Bearsbud. Too true. Im having to educate the fam bam on hockey. its quite entertaining

Well, I'm certainly no hockey expert as many of the "smart" hockey posters here are, but I can spot shitty play and a bad strategy when I see it..I saw shitty play and bad strategy from the Hawks in the 3rd period of game 2 and the entire 3rd game in general..

Now...Let all the hockey "experts" flame away as I don't give a shit

G/L to the Hawks in game 4

Yeah I had the same problem in high school ... couldn't find hockey fans at all in high school. There were 3 or 4 people I knew that played ice hockey that were into the team but they were so damn bad and so ignored by the media (the Hawks' own fault, by the way) that no one cared. Not even when they made the playoffs in 01-02.

We were too far away from the Wolves to care too much about them so I just talked football a bunch because that's all there was. The Internet hadn't quite taken off at that point. That's changed a ton now hahaha

I had a couple of buddies of mine in HS, that got me into hockey back in the late 90's. One was a Hawks fan the other a Blues Fan. I was always thankful for them getting me into watching the sport. If I put football games on the wife could really care less, but if there is a hockey game on she really gets into it.

Did anyone else get in to non-NHL hockey before becoming an NHL fan?

When I was having surgeries and I was laid up a ton I got sick of alot of the TV that was on and found The Wolves on the public channel and became a big fan of theirs for like 2 years.... the Hawks were bad/off TV at the time. Every Friday/Saturday when they had a game my ma would go out and get me something for dinner and I would eat way too much food and watch the Wolves.... back in those teenage days when I would literally down an entire deep dish Pizza and then get a bowl of cereal and not gain weight cause of metabolism/healing lol.

Anyways the Wolves were my first hockey team and then the Hawks came back on TV and I went to college and could not get the Wolves games as easily so I started watching the Hawks or going to Illini Hockey games (which were awesome) and then finally in 2009-2010 the Hawks won the Cup and now I barely miss a game.... though if I am honest.... Hawks < Bears slightly still.... I would fucking murder someone if I had to miss a Bears game lol.

That's a keeper right there. I think girls who like football are a dime a dozen these days. Got one that likes hockey? Gold.

Do these guys count?

Because it was right around the time those movies were released that kids in my neighborhood started playing street hockey and I don't believe it to be a coincidence.

In Chicago I am not sure this holds as true.... Hawks are pretty popular and the ladies love Kane or Toews.... Kane is the dude they bang in college and Toews is the dude they marry in their minds at least lol.

Hawks have tons of female bandwagon fans who go out and buy Kane/Toews jerseys.... or Sharp if they wanna try to stand out lol. Go up to any rando Hawks hottie at the UC with a Toews or Kane jersey and ask then something simple.... "When did we draft Kane?".... "What line does Toews play on?".... "Is Kaner a RW or a LW normally?" and watch their eyes roll back like "IDK I JUST WANTED TO BE LIKE ALL THE OTHER BANDWAGON HOTTIES"..... I heard one chick at a game go "ICING?!?! WTF IS ICING?!?!" and I nearly spit my beer out.

Well, ya see, that's the problem right there. You've got a ton of people (not just girls) who are only liking the Hawks because it's the current cool thing to do. The second the Hawks have a losing season they'll probably forget about it. But finding a girl that's legitimately into the sport is much, much harder to do.

Please note: not a slight against bandwagon fans. Just merely explaining the nature of the beast.

No idea where the discussion began, but I'll join in. Regarding Blackhawk fans.

My dad's been a die-hard since coming to Chicago as a kid in the 60's. He raised my brother and myself to play hockey, which we both loved. But when it came to the Blackhawks, I never quite understood it. He told stories of such legendary players and a team he loved, but I only knew their logo and the players he'd talk about (Secord-Savard-Larmer line for instance).

But to see a game, we had to go to the city and watch a bunch of scrubs play, and we'd have an entire section to ourselves. It wasn't really fun, and I didn't see the mystique around the Blackhawks. I remember having a Joe Sakic jersey and being an Avalanche fan as a kid, though I followed Martin Havlat via the internet and was a big fan.

Then Bill died and a dynasty was formed. As soon as the games came on, I've watched at least 90% and embraced them with all my heart. Hockey returning in Chicago is the greatest thing to happen in sports for me.

Even being raised by a hockey father and as a hockey fan as a kid, the Blackhawks weren't accessible. I was born in 91, and vaguely remember Roenick and Chelios, but by the time I really got into sports they were elsewhere and the Hawks were irrelevant. Looking back, I have no idea why the Hawks ever got rid of Roenick. To save money you let go of a legend? That's the wrong way of running a franchise. How they run it now is literally perfect. Even all year, being pissed at the money they gave Crawford and Bickell, they're playoff aces. So the money's not wasted.

My two cents.

This is the exact thing I was referring to, thanks for sharing Sentinel. Even if you wanted to get into Blackhawks hockey in the late 90s/early 2000s it was extremely difficult because you couldn't find Hawks coverage anywhere.

I mean, they didn't start broadcasting home games on TV until 2008 (or '07? I forget). Can you imagine how frustrating that would be if the Hawks still operated by that now?

Exactly why I wound up starting off with the Wolves in the AHL in 2006-2007... though nowadays I could easily find an online stream, but I would be pissed if I were forced to watch the Hawks that way
