I just want to say that I like to do all regular maintenance on my vehicles, however the bigger stuff I like to bring it in.

Hopefully they'll call me soon with a diagnostic.

Yea no, I never park in the garage. Plus I'm pretty sure it's a bearing so that's not something I can do myself.

I replaced mine, I'm pretty far from mechanically inclined. If I can do it anyone can. The part cost $80. The garage wanted to charge me around $300. It took about 4 hours, some bloody knuckles and a few beers.

You sneaky bastard. So how many times did the mechanic intentionally misdiagnose the problem with the hope of scamming you out of $$$?

never. I always just tell them that I can't afford it right now.

One time, I got a diagnosis and they quoted me $700 at the dealership to fix it. I stood there at the register and looked the part up online. Found the oem part on ebay for $150 and a youtube video on how to install it. It was a a simple bolt on job on the intake. I ordered that shit and it to me less than 2 hours to swap it out.

Well F me, they just called me and they got everything off and can't find anything wrong(at least they were honest about that), so now they're going to put the brakes back together and go take drive and see if it's still grinding.

PS - I do lots of youtubing when it comes to repairs, my biggest issue is not always knowing what to change.

It could be a stuck caliper or a caliper going bad. That's something you can do if you know how to put your brakes back on.

Ends up it wasn't my brakes or bearing, it was my godamn heat shield that rattled loose and it was rubbing on the drive shaft. Oh well, I got my brakes and suspension all checked out for 30$.

As much as I love cars and I have raced cars I am not very mechanically inclined. I can do a lot of things myself but I can't take a drivetrain apart and fix it or do anything electrically. I value my time above all else so if I can afford to pay someone to do the work for me that is likely the route I take. The more hours you work and the less free time you have, the less likely you are to spend said limited free time doing shit like that.

Sounds like a very good shop that you can trust.

Personally, if I can't figure out what is wrong with my car, I take it to a mechanic and have them diagnose the problem. Then I take it home and fix it myself.

Tend to do the same thing, though it's usually my dad that fixes it LOL.

Did something similar when I changed my radiator. Found a new one on rockauto.com for like $100 and changed it in about 90 minutes.

2 hours on the lift is what they told me, I got them to do an oil change too just to throw them a bone. As much as my OP was me complaining about them not calling me back on time, they treat me pretty well at the end of the day.

Had a similar issue the past two days with a repair shop.

Car would crank but not start. Got the car towed to the shop around 8am and I call twice between 8 and 1 and they tell me their "checking it now". End up calling at 230 to tell me the engine is flooded and it's all good. I pay my $145 ($85 for the tow) and sure as shit I check it later that night and same thing. Call in the am and they have me tow it over. Turns out my fuel pump needs replacing and the electrical component for the fuel pump also is fucked. They tell me Nissan calls for a $1500 repair, but they tell me they found a salvage yard that might have the component and that they would rather go that route. I stop over, they show me the new component and pump, tell me for the pump and labor it's $747 and their gonna cover the cost of the component and today's tow.

Everyone I've talked to thats a gear hand said its a fair deal and since they saved me around $2000 with what Nissan called for them to do, I'm more than happy to let them do it.
