Didnt know that

Sorry let me back that up Ronda Rousey was a bronze medalist her mother a world champion. Rousey has a skill set that most of the men currently don't have and certainly none of the women. She is a true martial artist in judo and as a result she has a massive advantage over the competition. There are plenty of skilled male fighters but I don't think there are any that have that true excellence in martial arts background and against such a high level of competition that rousey has.

The quality of fighting has really tapered off because of a severe lack of skill. You get guys that have wrestling backgrounds and love to throw and take punches and sure they have some ground game in the jujitsu department, but overall their skills are laughable. You don't see them slipping punches like professional boxers more often you see them take punches.

Some of them have decent ground games but mostly they do just enough to not screw up or the other guy does something stupid. Rousey's skills are such that she can get an arm bar submission just about any point she wants to.

the similarities with Tyson are uncanny actually she's a dominant competitor hitting her prime and there's just no one in her class in the league right now she's light years ahead of the nearest competition. but she very well could spark an influx of talent on the women's side as she becomes a hero to many of the women training and looking to be like her

Rousey is dominant as a female fighter and I enjoy her fights as a fan of the UFC.

However I do grow a bit tired of the outlandish stuff like when she said she thought she could beat Cain Velasquez in a fight in the Octagon cause "You never know whats gonna happen in a fight".... no.... just no..... lets step back Rousey.... if you stepped in against a 135lb male at the top of the chain..... Renan Barao.... TJ Dillishaw.... they would demolish you.... if you somehow held your own, go up 10lbs and fight Jose Aldo and let me know how you feel in 3 months when you wake up.

I dont doubt Rousey could fight a dude at 135lbs and beat him..... like a lower tiered fighter..... but if she thinks she could stand in there with dudes who are in her weight class and who are at the top of the heap.... she is wrong.... anything beyond that in weight class is wrong, especially her bullshit about Cain Velasquez.... he is 240lbs.... she couldn't throw him if he stood there and gave her his arms to try it and if she punched him on the button she would probably hurt her hand more than his chin.

Rousey will get beat though....UFC always goes through cycles like this where the champ seems unbeatable..... even Anderson Silva got knocked out eventually.

Lol Rousey should fight Anderson Silva when he comes back

I thought MMA was a fad that happened about 7 years ago. Had no idea people still watched it.

Nope, not a fad at all.... been growing in popularity for well over 10 years... UFC is contracted with FOX now too so they broadcast much more than a PPV every month or so.

Mick you will sympathize with this.... MMA reminds me of Soccer in terms of people's response to it.... they either really enjoy it or bash it relentlessly without really even giving it a chance. Idk why but I have found quite a few people who cannot go "Oh MMA.... eh not my thing, but enjoy it".... they gotta try to run it down and prove to you that its not a good sport.

MMA aint for everyone but if you can enjoy any combat sport.... Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Judo, Karate, etc.... you can enjoy MMA.

I love boxing (I boxed at university), just never really got interested in MMA. I'm not sure why. Maybe the overabundence of douchebaggery a few years ago when you couldn't go into a bar without some 22 year old gym goober wearing a tight Affliction T-shirt trying to impress some orange-skinned skank by acting like a badass.

I have nothing against it even though I'm not a fan myself. I just wondered what had happened because I used to see and hear about it non-stop but over the last 2-3 years it seems to have completely disappeared.

It's bigger then ever, speak to something you know about. It has been steadily growing for years.

I'm not doubting you (why would I? I know nothing about the sport), I'm just saying it appears to have disappeared only because I don't see people wearing the attire anymore and I don't see endless commercials for events on TV like I used to.

Admittedly, part of this may be due to the fact that I don't watch much TV anymore and I no longer frequent bars other than my regular.

I agree, it seems that the promotion has decreased and there are growing pains on FX1. However, it's a much larger loyal crowd than it was ten years ago. Unless something really goes wrong this sport will continue to grow. The athletes are getting better and will be some of the best athletes in the world. Watching a sport evolve is a lot of fun for me personally.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago White Sox
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Nebraska Cornhuskers
  2. Villanova Wildcats
Honestly that does surprise me. MMA talk has been more mainstream and popular than ever around here.
I don't doubt there are pockets of places where it is more popular than others, but those charts suggest to me that on a national scale it wasn't where it once was. There are a couple small upticks in recent ratings, but can those be sustainable?

TBH I think you see some ratings drops in the last year or so in UFC events because some of the big names that have drawn fans in for the last 10 years are phasing out and retiring.... Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz(went to Bellator), Rampage Jackson(went to Bellator), GSP(on hiatus), BJ Penn(retired).... Its also not a new thing people jump in to cause its fresh and different.... MMA needs to continue to develop high quality fighters and put on entertaining shows to maintain ratings.

Right now you have many events with guys I have never heard of who put on really good fights.... but when someone looks at the card they ignore it if they do not know many names on the card. I think as the new generation of fighters become bigger names the ratings will pick up.

Also.... UFC ratings are not a 100% read on how many people are MMA fans.... Bellator has started to take off with a different tournament style and they generally utilize the admitedly lower tier of talent that they can get.

I don't see MMA going away any time soon.

I agreewith you, if anything explains it, it has to be the new rotation of fighters(unknowns). However, they will start to emerge(Bones Jones), and these new fighters are FAR better athletes than the old school fighters. The competiiton can only get better IMO.

UFC also getting paid a bunch with that FOX deal. Lost a big draw when GSP decided to haul ass. Cain is a big draw who has been out for a while. Silva another big draw who has been out for a while but a Silva/Weidman 3 match would be a huge draw.
