I hope you guys have a great week while I'm gone, it should be a nice break for you from my stupid threads. Try not to burn down the forum while I'm gone, though it looks like Urblock might have that accomplished by the time I leave.

Also, don't let me come back and find my Hot or Not thread buried on page two. :hitler:

Eiffel Tower is a pain in the ass because of all the people.

Louvre is going to take a few days if you want to see it all. Probably my favorite museum in the world.

If you don't have French friends over there then I'd recommend popping into an Irish Pub. They tend to have a lot of Europeans (including French people) that are friendlier and more helpful. And generally wanting to practice their English which is great if you aren't fluent in French.

Not that I ever had a problem at other places but it's usually a bit more work at other places to make conversation and be social unless you speak French well with a proper French accent or have French friends already.

To me, if you can walk into a cathedral without bursting into flames, the cathedral in Reims is amazing. More so than Notra Dame. But, it is a bit outside Paris

Forgot to say that since I'll be out most of the day starting very early I decided to book a hostel and save costs that way. I'm also getting a museum pass which gains me entry into most museums and also doubles as a transit pass.

In college, I knew a girl who said if she ever went to Europe she would never go to France, because, "There's no culture there."

She was prolly dating one of those dudes who runs around going "France.... do they even have an army? Doesn't it surrender every day to someone? AHAHAHAHAH"

She was dating one of my roommates at the time. Pretty sure one the other guys I was living with got his D S'ed by her on multiple occasions during all this.

This Parisians hate Americans is BS*. Spent over 2 weeks in Paris over the last few years and didn't encounter any more assholes than one would in, say, New York or London. Don't be a jerk, respect their customs, learn a few French phrases and make an attempt. In almost every case they'll slip right into English and you will be fine. Remember, with all of the problems they've had, tourism is down and they want and need your money. I've also traveled around the Burgundy and Champagne regions; the French do not hate Americans. They do, however, hate loud, obnoxious, "You'd be speaking German if it weren't for us", jerks.

As said above, the Louve is huge. Yuge! A full day likely isn't enough. We also love the museums Orsay and L' Orangerie. Notre Dame is great and Versailles is incredible. Oh, do some research and you'll eat really well, too. Agreed the Eiffel Tower is crowded but you are in Paris so.... Don't miss Les Invalide, burial site of French soldiers (former hospital) including Napolean.

Have a great time!

*Parisians can be dismissive of anyone who isn't a Parisian. Don't let that bother you. Embrace it.

Yeah I would say it's not like they are dicks. They are just indifferent to people they don't know. But if you make the effort they generally will meet you halfway and reciprocate.

I think English speakers just assume everyone knows English but imagine someone coming into you in America speaking German. For most of us we aren't going to bother with that person because they don't speak English.

I think the people who propagate the myth of places like Paris where they "hate Americans" are the loud obnoxious Americans who wind up pissing people off and getting treated like shit because they were treating other people like shit.

You will find assholes of one sort or another anywhere you go.... hell if you go into a small town in Michigan and go to their local watering hole they might stare it you like you are an alien because they are not used to seeing anyone but regulars in their bar.... does that mean the majority of people who live in Michigan are barfly weirdos? No... it just means you happened upon a bad experience, it happens, live with it.

I think in most cases if you recognize you are a guest in another country and act like it, the majority of the people there will treat you as a guest.

If you act like a pompous frat boy asshole tourist thinking "These people are lucky I spent money to come here", then yeah they will treat you like an asshole.

Treat people the way you want to be treated, it applies around the globe.... you may run into the odd situation where you are treated unfairly, that sucks, but don't broad brush large groups of people because of it.
