Magic are interested in trading with the Bulls.

Ken Berger - CBSSports.com Keep Dwight? Not if the Magic could trade him to Chicago

The Orlando Magic would like to seriously engage the Bulls in trade talks for Dwight Howard, but the All-Star center's apparent reluctance to make a long-term commitment to Chicago has all but killed the discussions, league sources told CBSSports.com.

The feeling among rival executives remains that the Magic seem intent on rolling the dice and keeping Howard for the rest of the season, hoping a long playoff run, emotional ties to Orlando and an extra year and $29 million they could offer would persuade him to stay beyond this season. But the move would be highly risky, given that Howard has refused to publicly commit to the Magic -- a stance that sources view as a strong sign that he'd leave as a free agent if he isn't traded.

"He's telling everyone he's leaving," one league source said Sunday.

Magic executives are said to be unimpressed with the assets Howard's three preferred teams could provide in a trade, prompting them to engage in a calculated campaign to expand the field of potential suitors beyond the Nets, Mavericks and Lakers. But the team that can make the strongest case for Orlando to depart from its risky strategy of holding onto Howard are the Bulls, who could offer 7-footer Omer Asik, Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu, sources said. The Bulls also could offer a valuable first-round pick from Charlotte -- top-14 protected in this year's draft but but unprotected by 2016.

Such a scenario has gained no traction since Chicago is "not on his list," a person familiar with the situation said of Howard. Without assurances from Howard or his camp that he'd be willing to sign long-term with the Bulls, Chicago executives have exhibited no appetite for trade talks with the Magic. The two teams have spoken, but there's "no type of serious discussions" going on, a person familiar with the situation said.

The Bulls (34-9) also have the best record in the league and are "built for long-term success," said one person familiar with their strategy, making a trade for Howard a non-starter without his blessing. Bulls officials do, according to sources, privately have concerns about whether they have enough to get past Miami in a playoff series, but are content to take a shot at it with the group they have.

Efforts by Orlando to entice other teams that are willing to trade for Howard without a long-term commitment have been seriously hampered by the realization that such a team would only have Howard for about 25 games after Thursday's trade deadline -- not enough time to win him over to a city and team not currently on his list.

Magic CEO Alex Martins, who is spearheading the biggest personnel decision for Orlando since Shaquille O'Neal left as a free agent in 1996, told the Orlando Sentinel Sunday that the team has yet to make a decision on whether to trade him or not by Thursday's 3 p.m. ET deadline.

"We're not at the point where we're ready to answer that question yet," Martins said. "Sometime in the next four days we will be, but we're not at the point where we're ready to answer that question yet."

It won't stop the we need Howard campaign though. He's said all along that he DOESN'T want to come here and yet fans are still trying to play keyboard GM and figure out ways to get him here. That's the thing I'm sick of more than anything.

It would be one thing if he expressed interest in signing long term, but he hasn't. SO why waste time on it? You know?

Quite frankly, I just don't want the guy here anymore. He's an excellent player but the way he is handling this situation gives me bad feeling towards him. Just go to new jersey after the season.

****. I can't bring myself to read this article. I want him on the team very much and it makes me mad that he doesn't seem to want to come.

Howard's loss. If he wants to be a little ***** and play where he thinks he wants to, let him go and play for a perennial loser for the rest of his career.

If Howard thinks he can be "the go-to guy" on a team and win championships then so be it.

That trade sounds pretty appealing right now... I won't lie. The Bulls' line-up would be:

Howard, Noah omg
Gibson, (Noah)
Brewer, Turkoglu ehh, Butler
Hamilton (?), (Brewer), Korver
Rose, Watson

Bulls would need to depend on Noah to be able to hit some open shots sometimes when he's out there with Howard. The Bulls' defense would be absolutely deadly. I think I'd do this trade as much as I'd HATE to lose Luol Deng (assuming Howard man's up and agrees to a prerequisite extension).

Howard is delusional...he thinks he can close. And according to Ryan Rusillo, the list of players he wants to play with is laughable, and has nothing to do with winning titles. I don't believe Howard is all that bright...I could be wrong, but I don't believe it.

The funny part is that he wants to close games and the Lakers are on his "wish list." Sure, Kobe is not going to be there forever but still.

Apart of me is hoping that he goes to NJN in the off-season and DAL and LAL get nothing.

Man Howard is a fn idiot he could win multiple championships here in Chicago, I wanted him on this team but if he doesn't want to sign a long term contract then the Bulls shouldn't even talk to Orlando oh well it's his loss anyway.

He's said over and over again what his desired teams were. He has said he wouldn't extend here. He has said that he has no interest in coming here, as recently as last week. But Bulls fans are just ignoring these statements.

Part of the reason I don't want him is because he doesn't want to be here. Plus I'm not a fan of gutting the team for him either.

We are 34-9, that is not being a fucking homer people, that is a fact, the BEST record in the NBA, this isn't a fluke now that it is happening for the second season in a row, we have a SPECIAL team, why don't people see this? We can beat the Heat, trust me on that one, we just need players like Boozer and Korver to come up big and the only player that I am worried about is Rip, I love Rip but I do hope he is healthy come playoff time and I believe he will, so I am not worried, and to top it off we have the BEST PG in the league. Boozer has the ability to tear a defense apart when he has the ball and if we are being honest, the guy just needs the ball more, also Korver needs to come up big in big games unlike this year where he fucking disappears if we have a huge lead or if it is a big game, which is a problem via last years playoffs, and against the Magic a couple of nights ago, so I don't think anything is needed as of big moves as of trades. I will say it again 34-9 and the BEST BENCH IN THE LEAGUE AND THE BEST REBOUNDING TEAM IN THE LEAGUE AND THE BEST DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE AND THE BEST PG.... Why would you gut this team people?

Apparently this team can't get it done despite all of that.

The problem with guys like Boozer and Korver is that they need to play big minutes to get theirs.

There's a reason Utah left Brewer, Boozer and Korver go.

Those two can't get big minutes if they score 25 and give up 27 on the other end.

Boozer just need touches to get his. I don't think his production has to do with his minutes.

Korver I can agree with you on that though.

Same reason for DWill or he's not in the same league because he is not a Bull? And since when we should look for a reason in a team that made the WCF,lost their players and now it can't make the playoffs? It was simply a bad move for them.

He said if Jesus wants him to play in Chicago, he would. So now we have to rely on some fictional magician to speak from the great beyond in order for him to come here.

And why do people want this guy exactly?
