Duvall had 16 HR's last year. He has had 2 30 HR seasons. Schwarber has had 1 season that he hit to his potential.

So potential? Schwarber has 2108 PA's. .230/.336/.480 (121 HR)That is enough PA's to say that he fell short and potential is not a excuse.

Duval 2170 PA (Very close) .233/.293/.468 (113 HR)

The reality is you are paying for the HR here. 4 Mil for 8 HR's. Seems pretty pricy to me. Neither are solid LF gloves and neither are 'good hitters'

Rondon I get as he has been a injury case sense 2016. He was picked right before Schwarber and over that span pitched 536.2 IP with a 4.14 ERA. For 4 mil it is worth giving him a shot to compete for the 5 with short pen lefty as a back up plan. There is a need for experience in the pen,

I think that we need to see this year as a semi fire sale and a back fill of cheaper options. The reality is no one wanted to pay Schwarber 8 mil so Jed had to cut him. That is pathetic. This is a blunt reality that we need to see it for what it really is. Teams are cutting left and right.

It wouldn't shock me to see him in the KBO catching. It is a current trend for players like him.

He would balloon up to 300lbs on brat and HoHo's. It don't burn cal's walking to 1st 1 time per day and doing the babe trot 3 per week. He strikes out far too often to burn them running to 1st.

Eventually they will have to get a forklift to haul him over.

So in theory they already have a answer in hand with Bote at 3B.

But for argument sake:

Schwarber: 113 wRC+ as a hitter. And it has been pretty consistent except a 90 last year when most of the league tanked.
Bote: 100 wRC+ as a hitter. He has hovered around league avg over his career.

It is a loss of production no matter how you mix it.
DRS Bote sports a 3 DRS. So a positive value there.

Contract wise Bote is making 1 mil this year and it scales up every year after this one.

So quick take. Start Bote at 3B and Bryant at LF costs nothing more. The D should be about the same if not better with Bryant in LF vs Schwarber. This will be a argument for another time.

Add to it it takes away the 3B/OF swapping on Bryant. IMO conditioning for full time OF duty should help prevent injury. Not to mention he can focus on routes and other things vs going out there raw.


End of the day. Bote is on payroll and has a opertunity. His pay scales up to 2.5m then 4m; 5.5m; 7m club; 7.6m club. So giving him full time play can justify the increase. Not to mention might net some trade value if he peaks this year and has a team friendly deal in hand.

He is still arb3. That team would have to buy into it. That is why I see him playing over seas next year. They are not bound by MLB contracts and are more willing to let him catch as long as the power bat is there.

We all know that he can mash the ball. It is the fact that his D is passable vs good. and if it wasn't for his 13% walk rate his numbers would be scary bad. His high water BA was .250. And it was directly tied into his strike out rates.

Out of his 2108 PA. 1243 went into play. (58%) 23% of those resulted into a hit (416). 77% ended up as a out. (827). Of those 416 hits 121 were HR's (29%).

So we can argue it all day but Jed and most of baseball were looking at hard facts with the guy. The feel goods kept him going but the hard reality shows that 8 M was not worth it.

It would be based off of reducing payroll.


As I noted Kyle is a 113 wRC+ Player. 13% better than Bote. Bote is making 1 mil and will scale up from now on and it makes sense to see what he can develop into with 600 pa per year vs 200.

Kyle is not on payroll so there is no promoting. The debate is resign Kyle at reduced. ( If he would even accept it) or run with what they have. That is it.

I did say that David Ross did talk about Bryant in LF as a answer. And believe me that that is preobly being discussed by Jed. They have a cost effective answer in hand right now and it would cost less to add a UI/4th OF vs resigning Kyle.

Now there has been reports on Jackie Bradly but I would put that into the hot air catagory. Reason being is Jed has talked about the rotation as uncovering rough diamonds vs investing.

This seems to be the play this year. They will test the options that they have and add more potential types vs proven.

As far as Kyle goes I'm pretty sure it falls into wishful thinking at this point.

Not what I think. It is based off of what Kyle wants.

If his market turns out dead in America and he is forced to sign overseas then I would go back to catching.

Here is the main point of it. He was shot down as one and IMO it was a bad decision. There have been plenty of O first catchers in the history of the game. Mike Piazza for instance. So the whole notion is a false logic.

Now I do feel that a team will sign him as there are more teams kicking the tires and the vax has started to be distributed. So his chances of picking up a gig are good.

But in theory if he went over seas then yes. Go as a catcher. Get a few years under his belt to establish himself as a catcher then remarket himself in the states as a 30 YO power hitting catcher. It would prove to be a smart career move for him and could set himself up for a mega contract vs a (you are a DH kid)

Teams will pay for proven vs projects. He has a better chance at establishing himself this way then floating teams as a DH.
