Turn the temperature down. Turn the fan up. A/C is a more general term. It's main purpose is to make it cooler, so if you want it to work more (make it cooler), you turn it up.

When it is too cool because of A/C, do you say turn it up?
Yes, I live in the south. Ya cold climate hussies

Not sure what climate or location has to do with it. It's not like you're in Australia, and backwards by nature.

So, is turning it all the way "up" the same as turning it off in the south?

In the Spirit of this thread everyone owes themselves the few extra minutes to watch this video.
Afterwards, everyone can Turn Their AC Down For What.

Make the AC cooler, or the heat warmer.

If you want it to be colder, turn up the instrument that makes it colder. Turn up the AC

Of course you turn the air conditioner up to make it colder. This is almost as bad as yanny vs laurel.

You turn the AC up by turning the thermostat down to lower the temperature

"Up" is not synonymous with "on." Or is it...?

I installed a crank handle on my thermostat for this exact reason.

The AC doesn't crank any harder, bozo. It just stays on longer.
Depends on the unit and type of house. Larger houses will have AC's that can run lower power and if they need to will increase output as needed. Recently had to repair an AC on a house we sold and had to test coolant levels at different cycles and wait for the unit to jump into a higher "gear" so to speak to fully test the leak/repair.

If I want it cooler in my house I simply "turn on the air conditioner."

If the wife and I are having a conversation about it there is always degrees involved, for instance: babe, can you turn the air up a couple of degrees? I'm cold.

Or

Hey it's hot in here set the AC to (insert temperature) and let's cool the house off a bit.

When we are using specific terms like degrees then up is hotter and down is colder, obviously.
