I wish I remember which podcast it was that basically said let's bring in a TE that does one thing well. Well, I agree with them. If this guy can't block well, but can catch very well and be a glorified big slot, go for it.

A very low risk high reward signing.

Bruh, there is no reward for this guy.

For what it’s worth the Broncos believed in him enough to keep giving him a chance through countless injuries. He played out his entire rookie contract in Denver, they never chose to let him walk. Then he looked good enough for the Bears to give him this chance.

I’m intrigued. The guy keep doing the rehab and keeps getting another shot, so despite a half decade of repeated setbacks he’s still working his ass off. Things can pan out in a hurry for players who are just tenacious like that.

Michigan fan here. Butt was a primary threat at Michigan -- fast, good hands and a reasonable blocker. Workhorse with great attitude.

Would have been a low first-rounder or 2nd rounder without the injury.

The knee injury against FSU was a huge setback.

This guy has awesome potential if healthy.

I'm not sure what Jake Butt is at this point. He definitely doesn't have the athletic ability he had before that bowl game where he first hurt his ACL. He was never a big blocker, but maybe he has improved there. He's not a viable U TE option IMO. And if he can't block better than he could in college, he's not a good option at Y either. Then again, JP Holtz sucks too so he only has to be better than that.
Bears won’t carry three tight ends who are all substandard blockers. If Jake Butt makes the team it means Cole Kmet or Jimmy Graham got hurt in camp or because Butt took Graham’s spot by looking outstanding and making Graham look expendable. Put his odds around five percent for making the roster, but if he accomplishes that he could be a sleeper contributor.

This is all good, but just so my Bears brothers understand the time line....his last college game was in 2016. The Hoyer/Barkley year for the Bears.

It's like we're kicking the tires on Kevin White again.

Which is fine because this is essentially a camp invite. It’ll be a mild surprise if he survives the first round of cuts, to be honest.

He was a 5th rounder in 2017. He never played his rookie year due to an injury (ACL?). If memory serves me correct he was drafted hurt, so his stock dropped. Since drafting Butt the Broncos drafted TEs Troy Fumagalli (5th in 2018), Noah Fant (1st in 2019) and Albert Okwuegbunam (4th in 2020).

He also has 10 catches for 90 yards (no TDs) in his 4 seasons/dressed in 8 games.

My thoughts: Interesting prospect, but can't stay healthy. He's really shown nothing on the field and the team that spent a 5th rounder on him opted to add competition/move on in each year with the team. I'm unsure if he can add anything except training camp reps.
Yeah some said he was a 2nd round talent but drafted in the 5th because he was hurt with the ACL injury.

Someone save me the time... Have we done the "if this guy can" __, __,and __ "he can"____? I imagine this was a great signing if he can do all of those things.

What's the downside? An extra thread on CCS?

Bruh, there is no reward for this guy.

If you’re right, he’s gone.

If you’re wrong, good for the team.

Either way, it’s a win for everyone that he signed since there may be a chance he heals and does well.

Camp fodder. Maybe he surprises, but it only costs you a little money if there is anything guaranteed in his deal (probably not at this point) if he doesn't make it to the active roster. He's probably not PS eligible anymore too.

Looking back at scouting reports, he was a good prospect, but hasnt been healthy enough in years to be able to produce in the NFL. I'm not sure how much he has left after the injuries. He was a good athlete but never a freak. He wasn't a very good blocker.

IF he can stay healthy and IF he hasn't lost much athleticism, then he could be a good fit and a good backup. Don't be surprised if he doesn't make the roster if he's lost anything.

So... Zach Miller 2.0? (Not at all hating on Miller- that dude really looked like he was coming on until that gruesome injury).

Bush on defense. Butt on offense. Need some sexy on special teams now.
Some might want to add players like Josh "bringing the" Woods or Sam "I Must tip her", but the obvious answer is

Lachavious "Lascivious" Simmons.
