Salmons obviously will play all his minutes at SF playing against Pierce and the health of Salmons and his ability to matchup up with PP and be able to score the ball well will be key but I am wondering about the backcourt and how VDN handles that from a defensive perspective. Hinrich in the past has done a very nice job on Allen and has frustrated him. However he struggles against Rondo so there we have to hope Rose can do a good job there. With all that said you have Gordon who has to be out there and really score a very high level for us to succeed. The 3 guard lineup does not work unless you are okay with Kirk playing PP which is obviously not a good idea because if Kirk is out there you want him on Ray. How would you handle the Rose, Hinrich,Gordon trio in this series?

I imagine we'll see more 3 guard than you like unless Salmons is feeling near 100% which doesn't seem all that likely.

Kirk isn't an ideal matchup to Pierce, but John Salmons playing through injury may not be much better.

I don't think you worry about Ray Allen all that much. You just don't want to leave him open, but I don't think Ray Allen's going to beat us by creating a lot for himself.

You want to focus your defense on limiting Pierce and Rondo as creators using double teams if need be, and then letting anyone else beat you in single coverage if they can.

I imagine we will have to play 3 guard lineups some with Deng not playing(is he going to be on playoff roster?). Ray is someone you have to chase around and Kirk has also done a nice job on him. Unfortunately for us Deng has always done well on PP. That is big for us even though no one seems to want to admit it. I agree though that containing Rondo on the dribble is huge. Rose, Salmons, Kirk and Gordon all will play 35+ minutes regardless. Otherwise we are looking at LJ or Timmy playing some 3. Maybe Tyrus plays a little 3 but that is only if Noah and Miller are not in foul trouble. What do you think about Tyrus playing PP a little bit?

I like that idea. I remember seeing Thomas doing an admirable job on Lebron when he was matched up defensively. There is no doubt that Thomas is quick enough to stay in front of Pierce.

Thomas would do great on Paul Pierce. He's got the length and athleticism to really bother him. And now that his jumper is decent I think you'll see him playing the 3 spot a bit more often in the future, especially when the matchups are favorable.

I see Rose and Gordon playing 40 minutes each with Kirk 16 minutes at the guar spot and another 8-10 @ the SF spot

I have no problem with Ty guarding Pierce in spurts and off switches, but Pierce is seriously one of the best at pump faking and you know Tyrus will probably bite more than once.

I think this is key. If he is guarding Pierce off switches, it can be ok. But, id rather not see it for stretches since the issue becomes: who guards the 4? Salmons getting pounded in the paint by big baby is not a pretty picture.

You mean like Frolik burying his penalty shot in game six for the GWG?

Or Seabrook scoring in game 7, assisted by Frolik and Bolland? :icon-lol:

By the way, I'm not bitching about 4th liners as much as I'm bitching about the decision to dress certain fourth liners over others. Bollig or Brookbank over Morin makes sense maybe...20% of the time. When you need a guy out there to keep idiots in line, or expect a lot of shenanigans or a really physical game. Otherwise I just don't see their purpose.

Morin hasn't been playing well enough to Q's liking defensively (and away from the puck).

You've got a guy like Bollig who doesn't pretend to be someone he's not and plays every shift hard, does well on the forecheck, isn't a real liability in his zone (outside of the one lapse against the bruins last year) and will stand up for his teammates. To top it all off, the guy has a great shot.

Is his skating the prettiest? No. But he gets by. Fl

Does he have a lot of skill? No. But that's why he's on the 4th line.

Does he do the job of a 4th liner well enough? Yeah, I don't see any issue for him to be on the 4th line especially with his work ethic, style of play and cap hit.

Right. It's more about the decisions the coaching staff makes that don't make sense rather than bashing any one particular player, although Bollig is easily the worst player on the team. Ideally, for me, when or if everyone on the team ever gets healthy again, the 4th line would be:

Kruger-Handzus-Smith.

All players who can play other roles on the team other than just being a 4th line guy.

Ben Smith looked great last night. Hope he stays up all year as his skill is a huge boost when teams finally think they are getting some relief after Toews, Kane, Hossa etc. leave the ice.

Although I can't help but think that Smith is setting a standard for himself as a bottom 6 forward. He may be that in the long run, but I definitely think on other teams he would be very solid on the top lines. I doubt he is complaining though, playing as a defending champion and being one of the favorites again this year doesn't get much better.

That's ideal for me, too. Lowering Zus' ice time from second line minutes to 4th line minutes keeps him as fresh as he can be if you need to win a draw in your own zone late in the game. Also, all three can kill penalties, which is nice to be able to say about a fourth line.
