The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Michal Rozsival to a one-year contract worth $2 million.

Rozsival has a right-handed shot which would provide the Blackhawks with four right-handed shooters, barring any trades. Rozsival is a good shot-blocking defenseman that is capable of playing the penalty-kill as well as top four minutes. Not only is he capable in the defensive end, but he fits the Blackhawks in terms of solid puck movement and passing ability.

In 54 games last season, Rozsival scored one goal and 12 assists, while adding 91 blocked shots and a plus-8 rating. He has dealt with injury issues in the last two seasons, appearing in 119 games out of 164 games, but other than that he has been a rock the rest of his career.

With the addition of Rozsival (along with Brookbank) it is quite clear that someones head will be on the chopping block before the season starts. The defensive corps as it stands includes Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Nick Leddy, Johnny Oduya, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Steve Montador, Sheldon Brookbank, and Dylan Olsen. Given the way that the goaltending situation played out last season, the Blackhawks probably figured it would be easier to plug the holes on defense with a stay-at-home effort rather than take a flyer on the next goaltender for Chicago.

At a $2 million cap hit, it provides the Blackhawks with a cheaper and equivalent player to Steve Montador, who is set to make $2.75 million over the next three years.

Rozsival should play around 20 minutes per night and could line-up on the right side of the 2nd pairing.

So I mean this with all sincerity but...... why? Especially now with the lockout coming.

Not a bad pickup in that he's a decent player, but we need to move a D-Man now. That leaves us:

Keith-Seabrook

Leddy-Hjalmarsson

Oduya-Roszival/Brookbank/Montador/Olsen

I'm wondering if this means Montador hasn't progressed as well as hoped and they don't anticipate him playing for a while, of course with the lockout, that doesn't really matter.

If he can stay healthy (a big if) I like it. haven't sen the $$ yet, so my final opinion is guarded. He seems to be the type that would play Hammer's role...SPECULATE.

Yawn. It's not like there will be a season anyway. Wake me when they put on their big boy pants and decide to have serious negotiations instead of all this posturing for PR points.

I think you'll see Rozsival on the 2nd pairing.

Keith/Seabrook

Leddy/Rozsival

Oduya/Brookbank (Hjalmarsson)

Best case scenario, I'd rather see Hjalmarsson stay and Oduya go but that won't happen. If they do decide to keep Hjalmarsson or Montador (I don't think they would keep both) then I'm not really sure what would happen. If they kept Montador I can see him and Brookbank swapping games.

Also last year we added O'Donnell, Lepisto, and Montador... this year Oduya, Brookbank, and Rozsival... I think we definitely upgraded big time.

But with the roll back of salaries, no one has to go, they can sign three more guys and have a 12 man d rotation.

I doubt the players will allow a salary rollback again. Hawks will see this guy play in 2013-14.

On the Rangers he was their #1 defenseman... as a #4-7 I don't have much of an issue with it especially for the price.

He is stockpiling D-men so Detroit cannot have them I guess.

Seriously though somebody's gotta get traded now.
