Actually more than 3000 years ago, and not with the aid of space and fancy sensors, philosophers and mathematicians were trying to calculate how round the Earth is...and in many cultures their after. Only a smaller subset of culture over that time thought otherwise...and probably to stifle the competition. I also think it was known that the Earth was round well before that, like 10,000+ year based on human expansion and modes of travel.

You are correct, though, we have no capacity at this time to determine if folding\warping\collapsing space is possible. Nothing has been discovered or even remotely observed to suggest that it is possible. Just supposition at this point in history.

Didnt an ancient greek dude figure it out and he wasn't off by much on how big the earth was and said it was round?

This dude, Eratosthenes. The concept of the Earth being round is an older notion, otherwise Eratosthenes wouldn't have devised his experiment they way he did. He was a rather clever dude.

Yup. Given the tools and time period it is pretty impressive that he was able to get as close as he did, but you are correct that there was plenty of discussion and experimentation prior to him on the concept. Too bad many records were not kept or destroyed in India and other SE Asian locations as there was some pretty strong foundations being built there as well.

Which is why it's sad to me that scientific exploration of the unknown seems to be down more and more every year and advancement seems to all be focused on making the technology we currently have easier to track everything we do.

Yeah, it's interesting to say the least, they try so hard to try to be plausible in it's inventions but I just laugh sometimes.

I get what you are saying, but even at 3000bc relitively speaking that's just like yesterday when we're talking 4.5 billion years of earth or whatever. May be my only regret when I die, not being able to live long enough to be around when humanity finally gets it shit together and figures out life.

Every hear of a thermonuclear bomb?

Anyhow, I read somewhere that the "flat earth" concept gained traction when people couldn't explain arctic mirages. A good arctic mirace makes it look like the earth is flat.
