I completely understand the science behind the Large Hadron Collider but I can't help fearing that one of these manufactured collisions is going to lead to an H-bomb like annihilation of the planet.
But I digress. I do find it interesting that we now know of subatomic particles and can't wait until they can start measuring them and giving new weight or density ratings to the periodic table of elements. That thing is getting pretty cluttered.
What do you mean by giving new weight and density ratings to elements? AFAIK, the Higgs field (and boson) is what gives the other subatomic particles mass, what gives mass to the atoms of the elements is a different matter (no pun intended) and are pretty set.
And there's no chance of anything as dramatic as a planet ending explosion happening at the LHC, even if it's high-energies they are working with it's not high enough. And besides when did a slight risk of a catastrophe stop scientists, they thought there was a chance that detonating the first nuclear bomb would cause a chain-reaction that would burn up the Earths atmosphere, but pushed the button anyways.
