I predict that Hooters will be gone in 10 years.

I am a tourist in Chicago, been away for 25 years. I eat one - on average - hot dog every 18 months, and it's always Portillo's when I visit you warm-hearted Midwestern folk. And I enjoy a Maxwell St. Polish plus a regular dog with the fixins.

However, a friend took me to a place called Hot Doug's a couple years ago, blew away Portillo's IMO.

I do fondly recall the hot dog eateries of my childhood (no idea if any are still around): Fluky's. Gene's & Jude's. Hot Dog Island. Irving's.

I lived in Chicago for 25 years and here are my favorites in this order:

-Nick's Hot Dog stand: Belmont and Laverne. They used Slotkowshi hot dogs, sesame seed buns and the best french fries I have ever eaten. Run by husband/wife combo and they literally killed themselves from overwork

-Superdawg: proprietary hot dog recipe. Fabulous seasoning. Great fries when they are cooked correctly

-Taste Hastee: garden on a bun. Proprietary recipie. First time I ever had lettuce on a hot dog. They are closed.

-Gene and Jude: fries on top of the dog, typical Vienna beef dog

Does OP realize there is a whole Food forum? Or that leaving pizzas on your car roof is a bad idea?

Gene & Jude - IIRC the dog w/fries was ridiculously cheap and tasty, as in less then a dollar when I went there.

Had a friend that loved ketchup on his hot dog, kept a bottle in his car for his frequent trips to Gene & Jude since they didn't offer any.

LMAO @ keeping a bottle of ketchup designated for hot dogs in his car. Now that's a dedicated man.

Unfortunately I can't usually partake in Chicago-style hotdogs because someone thought it was a good idea to slather the buns in my kryptonite (poppy seeds).
