Hi guys. Just trying to weed through all the different daily TC reports, but just wanted to get an update on Fields.

How's he looked?
Is he doing better than Dalton/Foles?
Any gaps that the beat writers have seen or maybe have they seen progression throughout the camps?

Thanks in advance.

Amazing.

It's hard keeping reasonable expectations at this point.

The Louis Riddick tweet sums it up:

Not going to say how crazy good some of things I have been told about Justin Fields the professional have been thus far. Don’t want to hear the “it’s only training camp” brigade puff up their chest and scream at the top of their lungs. BUT…it has been THAT good. Just sayin. ??‍♂️

Trying to read between the lines with national media hype and local beat writers excitement, it seems like he really has had a very good camp. He's still a rookie and can process plays a little slowly at times, but he appears to be improving each day. His first practice of camp was his worst and I did read a couple times this last week that it was his best practice yet which is a good sign to me. He's made a lot of wow throws and has a special ability to fit throws in tight windows and also throw with touch if needed. He is still making some rookie mistakes, but appears to learn from those quickly.

As far as comparing to the others, Dalton seems to be having a very good camp as well and not doing anything to lose the job. Foles has been good in his limited snaps against 3rd string.

Game action will tell a lot. Dalton could struggle against a good Miami defense with a banged up oline.

Based on tweets and reports, Fields has looked like a rookie going through the learning curve. He has gotten noticeable better in the latest days of training camp with sounds good for his progress.

It's been reported that Dalton has looked sharp, so who knows.

They’re going to enshrine him in the hall next year and get it over with. Something about inflation and saving costs on his bust. ?‍♂️

This is accurate. Fans are making it seem like he's been a world beater, when it simply isn't true. He has shown things that merit excitement but he hasn't been consistently good to the point where you cant defend starting Dalton, who also has looked good.

I know it is off topic for a Bears Forum, but what about Hurts?

Hurts has been okay. Not good, not bad. He's missing a few WRs while throwing against air (no defender), but it's hard to say if it's on the WR or the QB. What's interesting is that rookie Devonte Smith was by far the best WR in camp before he was sidelined with a minor MCL sprain. Not sure what that says for the remaining group of 2020 1st rounder Reagor, Fulgham and the rest. I'd add with signing Steven Nelson their secondary actually isn't too bad. The Slay, Nelson, Maddox (slot) and rookie Zach McPhearson seem to be making plays.

Overall he's been nothing to get too excited about, but still making some plays. One of the national Athletic reporters who used to cover the Eagles (Sheil Kapadia) was also at Ravens camp and mentioned mobile QBs like Lamar Jackson, Mike Vick and old school McNabb wouldn't look good in practices. So much of their value comes from their ability to extend plays and scramble, so in a practice setting just isn't the right format.

I'd add, based on the camp reports I'm hearing the beat reporters want to be all in on Hurts, but keep seeing things that make it tough to do. Personally I'm thinking he gets the full 2021 season, but ultimately is a part of a package next offseason that sends him + picks to Houston for Watson. I know that's a pretty massive shift of direction but how often does a QB of Watson's caliber become available AND your team has the draft picks to make a move happen?

I do think the Eagles will be very run heavy this year. They will lean on their OL and RBs to pave the way (sort of what Indy did last year). That could hide a lot of Hurts shortcomings, but who knows?

Just a taste of Adam Jahn’s article from The Athletic today:

“When Justin Fields, for now a backup in Chicago, takes the field for team drills during Bears training camp, Allen Robinson, a first-teamer, often leaves it. At some point, that will change. But for now, the Bears’ best receiver has a front-row seat to the development of the team’s prized rookie quarterback on the offense’s sideline.

“It’s been fun watching him,” Robinson said.

Everyone at Halas Hall — from those who evaluated him before the draft to those currently coaching him or playing with him every day to those wearing No. 1 jerseys and shirts in the temporary stands — would say the same. As it should be, Fields’ natural arm talent is captivating camp.

On Sunday, one of Fields’ best throws was a side-armed touchdown pass to receiver Riley Ridley in the back of the end zone and just past defensive back Xavier Crawford during a team drill in the red zone. It came on the run to his left after he eluded some pressure.

Fields’ side-armed throws and deep-ball hits haven’t altered the Bears’ plan for him just yet. He’s still behind Andy Dalton, who also has played well. But you’d have to think that the Bears are, at the very least, thinking about slightly deviating from their plan for Fields, whether it’s occasional snaps with the Bears’ best receivers and tight ends or different calls in practice.”

The article is titled:

Justin Fields arm talent is taking over Bears training camp. What’s next for the rookie.

One more snippet:

“A skeptic would point out that similar things were said about former Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky not too long ago. Dalton and Foles also have completed impressive throws in camp this year.

But every deep ball that Fields connects on or even ones in the 20- to 30-yard range are signs of how different their current first-round quarterback is from their previous one. Fields’ success on them should stand out. Even the spiral of the football and Fields’ flick of the wrist look different. Dalton and Foles also aren’t hitting side-armed throws on the run in nearly every practice. Their speed and burst aren’t topic of conversations with Nagy, either.”

Fields has been making amazing throws, progressing every day, doesn't seem to make the same mistake twice.

Dalton has been very consistent.

Fans will have a much better read when the Dolphins arrive for practice and pre-season game.

I hate the Iggles but really like Hurts. He's a stand up person and went through alot in college. Definitely want to see him shine.
