Just a taste of Adam Jahn’s article from The Athletic today:

“When Justin Fields, for now a backup in Chicago, takes the field for team drills during Bears training camp, Allen Robinson, a first-teamer, often leaves it. At some point, that will change. But for now, the Bears’ best receiver has a front-row seat to the development of the team’s prized rookie quarterback on the offense’s sideline.

“It’s been fun watching him,” Robinson said.

Everyone at Halas Hall — from those who evaluated him before the draft to those currently coaching him or playing with him every day to those wearing No. 1 jerseys and shirts in the temporary stands — would say the same. As it should be, Fields’ natural arm talent is captivating camp.

On Sunday, one of Fields’ best throws was a side-armed touchdown pass to receiver Riley Ridley in the back of the end zone and just past defensive back Xavier Crawford during a team drill in the red zone. It came on the run to his left after he eluded some pressure.

Fields’ side-armed throws and deep-ball hits haven’t altered the Bears’ plan for him just yet. He’s still behind Andy Dalton, who also has played well. But you’d have to think that the Bears are, at the very least, thinking about slightly deviating from their plan for Fields, whether it’s occasional snaps with the Bears’ best receivers and tight ends or different calls in practice.”

The article is titled:

Justin Fields arm talent is taking over Bears training camp. What’s next for the rookie.
You'd hope he gets more reps with AR. If Dalton goes down, they should already have a feel for each other.

I hate the Iggles but really like Hurts. He's a stand up person and went through alot in college. Definitely want to see him shine.
Hate the Eagles? Why? It's not like they are the Cowboys or anything?

Seriously on Hurts, I'm really rooting for him as well. If Philly can have a top 20 caliber QB for under $2M for the next 3 years with their draft capital they could really build something. The issue is I get a Tyrod Taylor vibe about his play. Great athlete and makes enough passing plays to keep you interested, but not enough to consistently keep the offense in a groove.

For me:

Plan A - Hurts is the guy and build around him
Plan B - Hope Watson's legal stuff passes and take a run at him, hoping Hurts did just enough to be a valuable piece in the overall trade.

Hi guys. Just trying to weed through all the different daily TC reports, but just wanted to get an update on Fields.

How's he looked?
Is he doing better than Dalton/Foles?
Any gaps that the beat writers have seen or maybe have they seen progression throughout the camps?

Thanks in advance.

Undeniable.

Everyone should be prepared for a lot of 3 and outs against the Dolphins. They may pull One early and sacrifice Foles behind the current Oline.
I really hope most of these guys make it back by the end of next week.

It will be like when John Fox was the HC and they always opened the preseason running the ball 86 times in a row to start the game.

One more snippet:

“A skeptic would point out that similar things were said about former Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky not too long ago. Dalton and Foles also have completed impressive throws in camp this year.
Oh please! Scrubisky is and never was in the same stratosphere in talent as JF. Arm talent wise JF is closer to Mahomes than he is to Scrubisky. If Mahomes is a 10 and Scrubisky is a 1 Justin is at least an 8. No 10 isnt a perfect score im just using numbers to illustrate where his talent level is.

Yea, I have noticed there seems to be a push of late to downplay what we are literally seeing with our own two eyes. Maybe to lower the temperature some on all the hype and attention he has been getting? Who knows, but one thing is clear —- the guy is showing flashes of ability that we have never seen before in a Bear QB.

The sky is the limit with Fields. From what little bit we have seen, his ceiling is about as high as it gets for a QB. Will he get there? Time will tell. But I sure as heck like what I have seen so far??

Hurts has been okay. Not good, not bad. He's missing a few WRs while throwing against air (no defender), but it's hard to say if it's on the WR or the QB. What's interesting is that rookie Devonte Smith was by far the best WR in camp before he was sidelined with a minor MCL sprain. Not sure what that says for the remaining group of 2020 1st rounder Reagor, Fulgham and the rest. I'd add with signing Steven Nelson their secondary actually isn't too bad. The Slay, Nelson, Maddox (slot) and rookie Zach McPhearson seem to be making plays.

Overall he's been nothing to get too excited about, but still making some plays. One of the national Athletic reporters who used to cover the Eagles (Sheil Kapadia) was also at Ravens camp and mentioned mobile QBs like Lamar Jackson, Mike Vick and old school McNabb wouldn't look good in practices. So much of their value comes from their ability to extend plays and scramble, so in a practice setting just isn't the right format.

I'd add, based on the camp reports I'm hearing the beat reporters want to be all in on Hurts, but keep seeing things that make it tough to do. Personally I'm thinking he gets the full 2021 season, but ultimately is a part of a package next offseason that sends him + picks to Houston for Watson. I know that's a pretty massive shift of direction but how often does a QB of Watson's caliber become available AND your team has the draft picks to make a move happen?

I do think the Eagles will be very run heavy this year. They will lean on their OL and RBs to pave the way (sort of what Indy did last year). That could hide a lot of Hurts shortcomings, but who knows?
If Philly wants Watson, wouldn't it be best to try and low ball the Texans right now, then Philly takes on the headaches, but in return gets Watson.?

I have thought that Hurts is actually a little bit better throwing the ball than Jackson, but not quite as dynamic running it. I hope he does get a full year, because I think he might just surprise so folks.

The whole Watson thing is tricky. From what I understand they still want 3 first rounders. It's all about risk vs. reward. With the civil and criminal legal process looming over that's a massive risk. With only having 4 games seeing Hurts as a QB in his rookie year are you really willing to cut bait this early?

It's really complicated. Imagine the Eagles giving up Hurts + 2 first round picks and some additional information comes out where Watson never plays again. That's a massive risk especially since Hurts still has untapped upside.

For me it would prefer they sit back, let the year play itself. I don't mind paying a bit more for Watson as long as you have a better idea what you are getting and giving up. Remember, the Eagles thought they had this all sorted out with Wentz and a year after extending him that all changed. I want to do all I can to avoid that.

Definitely think 3 first rounders is way too high for Watson right now. Pending investigation, it's possible he could miss (a lot) of playing time. Honestly, even 2 first rounders might be high. I'd offer a first and a second along with a second the following year.

If I'm the Eagles I'd offer a first and hurts and wait them out. They have to hope nothing worse comes out and plummets his value

Comparing Scrubisky to JF is laughable. Coming out of college you could CLEARLY SEE that both Mahomes and Watson were better than him especially arm talent. I remember seeing an occassional throw by Scrub that would be a thing of beauty but as they say a broken clock is right twice a day. I watched JF in college as did many here have and it didnt take long to see he wasnt the stereotypical OSU qb who was a great athlete but couldnt throw for shit. The first thing i noticed was the arm and accuracy. This kid is not what people think and i am as sure today about JF as i was back in 2017 that Mahomes was going to be a star.

They can offer them conditional firsts based on his case and availability
