Rugs.....

I'm on the fence. Right now I have none, not interested in getting any, and honestly don't miss having carpet or rugs. But it's one of those things I can see myself flip-flopping on and buying a bunch for the house. IDK though, then I would need to worry about all the stains, mites and allergens just to add a tiny bit of cushion.

Yes, furniture is trash these days. Paid a couple of grand a few years ago for a nice big sectional. Its already trashed.

Having two dogs doesn't help neither does the fact that I "Mainline tubs of maple syrup" according to @Novak but generally speaking it seems like anything from the major furniture marts around here is basically all the same trash with different fabrics on it. Cheap recliner parts, press metal internals etc. Walking through furniture stores recently because we want to buy some new stuff again I've noticed that it is pretty much all the same. The worst are the bed frames.

I think we are going to try to buy a couple of separate recliners and a sofa with no moving bits this time. I am over the sectionals.

We've also considered buying Amish furniture, it is built to last but you pay out the ass for it. Easily triple the price of the regular stuff here. I think it is cheaper in the midwest though, so have considered trying to buy some to bring back from a trip that direction some time.
Check out Arthur Illinois. Amish town. I have an oak desk that was made there. 32x62 and heavy as hell. Will last forever.
Also where we bought Rango.

You bought Rango from a furniture maker?

Lmao I have this image of you like:

"This desk is wonderful, I'll take it..."

puppies barking at puppy Rango who is trying to murder the others

"... and that dog, throw in the dog"

Amish guy like "Sir, we don't really sell dogs..."

Urblock: "Shut up!"

Funny. The guy with the dogs was the furniture makers uncle. Lived 3 miles down the road and had a sign about the pups at the shop. No free dogs from those guys. Lol.

Something tells me you've never taken apart a couch and repaired it.

Knowing how to type "Couch repair" into Youtube is a far cry from actually performing said repair.

FTR I did "repair" this upstairs couch with some wood screws, but the fundamental problem is the construction used this junk wood/particle board that their screws ripped out of over time.

That material, even using larger wood screws, is crumbling.

And it is the spot where the reclining brackets attach the top to the bottom, so it is continually getting wear.

I am an expert in this field.

Furniture today is made of cheap left over grade 3 wood products and furniture made in the 80's and earlier simply had better construction.

Furniture today is in the Age of Disposal.
Go to Ikea and purchase anything and throw it out in a year and a half when you are done. It isn't built to last, they don't want it to last. They want you to buy another one when it's done.

In the past, you bought once and refinished when it went bad. Those days are history.

All couches and sofa sectionals are micro-fabric or bonded leather. If there is damage, it is barely repairable with any guarantees.

All millennials wouldn't even know if they stumbled upon a Stickley, or Baker Table! Henredon? Drexel?---They'd put it on the burn pile if they got it handed down to them.

It doesn't end with furniture...
It's cars, kitchen appliances, houses, etc... The world wants to save and cut corners.

Like the two Lane tables that I have that I actually want to get rid of?

I know they are amazing and all but they just do not fit, and aren't ever going to fit into the decor I have (they are the shorty one so they just dont work with my full sized furniture. )

I used to think it depends on how much I pay for it. Which is why I thought the stuff I bought from IKEA wouldn't last long... I've had some dressers and a bed frame from there for about 12 years. I even had a computer desk from there for over a decade.

I bought the stuff myself when I was in high school. Now I think it's more about how well you take care of the furniture you have, and the type of furniture it is.

I think any dresser, desk, table, etc. could last a while if you take good care of it. I think a couch is one of the main pieces of furniture that will wear out quickly if it's cheap.

Bingo

Anyone that purchases furniture, cabinets etc at IKEA gets what they deserve. Absolute trash.

Hint for those looking to buy furniture or cabinets. If it is made with particle board it is cheap. It is not hard to look at how drawers and things are made. Staples and glue=bad. Dovetail=good. Particle board=bad Solid wood=good.

Well if you live with a wife who is a cat fanatic you’ll find the furniture lasts until you cut the cats tail off accidentally using your automatic recliner
