Nice thoughts, and yes, if things worked that way it would be a good time.

But get back to me when you grow up and pay taxes and own something. I don't mean that to sound like it does, but you have no experience. I won't disagree, we as humans have done some fucked up things. From war to pollution and so on, we are terrible organisms. However, we are not to blame for all extinction on this planted. Every day, hundreds of livings things go extinct, and not because we did something or because we didn't do something. It happens. We may be doing more harm by keeping something around when it is not sposeda be.

Yup, it's me, the vegetarian, tree-hugger from Lotusland (but keep in mind that I have never, ever done yoga, so that's something, right?) and of course I think this child has the right idea. Yes, she hasn't experienced much in her life yet, but she's not afraid to speak about what she believes in, which is commendable. The problem with getting older and garnering more responsibility is that our time is spread thing and sometimes we don't use some of that time to do things that don't relate directly to our lives, and yes, that might include thinking about the environment and how it will affect people in the future. Parents care about their children, but instead of worrying if they will have clean water and food free of hormones and carcinogens and poisons, sometimes they're more concerned about how much money they can accumulate to "help" their children in the future. Sure, savings is great, but higher risk of cancer is not great.

Everyday I see more and more tankers in the bay near my home. Right now the provincial government wants to put even more there. Everyday the government of Canada gets closer and closer to digging a pipleline that will lead across British Columbia to the Pacific Ocean. Oil and oceans, as we all know, are an awesome combination. Ecosystems are fragile, and so are our bodies. Everything around us is inhaled or ingested. Of course people need to make money to live because, hey yo, capitalism, but that doesn't mean people can't make responsible choices. I don't live off of tradesies and paperclips. Although, if people want in on tradesies, I'm totally in.

I hope she doesn't lose her drive and that she only becomes a smarter, more educated person. Nothing makes me sadder than the loss of drive and passion for causes as people get older and jaded and just worn down by the world. I understand getting worn down by the world, but giving up is pretty lame too.

And now for some delicious soy snacks and feminist literature.

G'night.

You crunchy hippie.

I agree, she has balls for talking her mind in front of that crowd, and I won't disagree that we as a species, as a people, we need to be aware of our environment and the effects we have on it and not destroy it.

I foresee a major collapse, either societal or environmental maybe even both, happening within the next 100 years. Short-term profits are more important than long-term sustainability and I don't see that changing any time soon, no matter what the politicians and CEO's pander to the public in the interest to get votes or buy their products. The problems we are facing are completely new and there is no precedent in history to look back at and see how to manage it. We are not on some teleological path, it's all completely random and we are the only ones who have control over our own destinies. If we somehow irreversibly manage to make this place uninhabitable for us then that's that, we're done, no do overs. All in all I have little faith in humanity, we are going to **** it up somehow and either kill ourselves or make this place an awful place to live in (which is sort of true for a large part of this planet's human population already).

I don't see any reason why the things she mentions couldn't happen? Why hasn't it?

Nice green propaganda video. Kids are never to young to be used as political fodder or stand on soap box and recite a speech penned by an adult.. Give her parents a nice bowl of trail mix and a new pair of Birkenstocks.

Last night I was too beach-sleepy to look it up, but I knew she looked familiar. She's Severn Cullis-Suzuki, the daughter of noted academic and environmentalist David Suzuki. He's a fucking national canadian treasure. At the time of that video she was 12. She studied at Yale and is doing graduate work at the University of Victoria. She lives on Haida Gwaii! I would love to go there. It looks so beautiful. It's also where lots of debris from the tsunami in Japan last year has been washing ashore.

I do think sometimes parents tell their children what to believe, in terms of politics, religion, etc. Of course they do, they're all under one roof and in the early years parents are the greatest influence on their own children. I also agree that using a child as propaganda is completely inappropriate, whether for environmental or Westboro Baptist Church reasons. However, there are also so many smart, eloquent children who are thinking with their own minds and clearly able to articulate their thoughts, feelings and information. At 12 I was already letting lose of the tether of my parents and their beliefs and striking out on my own, and was smart enough to have penned a similar speech. Kids are smart. Especially ones who get a good education. Quality education is so damn important. Teaching rational thought and critical thinking is so important. It doesn't take much to memorize facts and regurgitate them, but to actually understand ideas, expand on that with discussion and yes, sometimes dissent, is so much more important.

And now for some fruit and granola and then a walk along the seawall. No big deal.

Also, hippies do not have hair this fucking shiny, let me tell you. This hair gleams!!

Why the antagonistic tone towards those that care about the environment, or "dirty hippies" as you probably like to call them. Don't care about the environment, why not?

Because it's guilt/scare propaganda? The diatribe obviosly not penned by her on her own is aboot 15 years old now, and last I checked mother nature is still kicking our ass, not vice versa.

So all this talk about keeping waste out of water streams and air pollution in check is just scaremongering? And since nature kicks our ass now and then, it's OK to pollute? What good does that do?

So do you only ride a bike and never drive?

If you do drive, why do you hate the environment so much?
