Hawks have re-upped their contract with WGN through the 2015-16 season.....un-freaking-believable....UGH. Every season, now, it seems more and more games are on WGN and fewer on CSN. That leaves us outside the Chicago market screwed....

I blame McDonough

Rightfully so. And it's not like it's "Super Station" per the NHL contractual obligations so WGN brings NOTHING but shitty camera work, and horrible after game interviews by such winners as Dan Rohn. YAY!!

But hey, at least they are on TV, for some.

Well here's my real beef, I don't know any details and this is speculation on my part but I don't think Center Ice has a contract with WGN. Sure they'll pick up one or two game a year on WGN but I'm going to guess (again) that they are 1 game deals and are done because the other team has no feed for that game. So basically when the hawks on WGN I have to normally watch the other team's feed. Here's the rub they like to pick the divisional games a lot. So I have to suffer hearing the wings announcers who are like Pat and Eddie but a trillion times worse when it comes to telling stories about whatever or I am subject to the Columbus feed and those guys are simply the worst in the league. So yeah when I am subject to the Columbus feed I don't watch the game.

That's why I hate the WGN games, not because they are WGN games, but because I have to listen to the wings idiots or the BJs fucking atrocious announcers.

Adam Jahns at the Suntimes is very kindly looking into the problem for the Rockford, Champaign folks. Hopefully something comes of it. If it's one thing McDonough doesn't like it's negative publicity.

Ideally Comcast would start carrying WGN Chicago in these markets so I don't have to pay extra, but at the very least I would hope that they stop blacking out the Center Ice games for these markets.

Can someone explain to me why the NHL won't let Hawks games be on WGN America? Is it territorial rights?

I believe it has to do with national broadcast agreements with Verses and NBC. It might be something that can be negotiated when those are up, which I think might be after this season or next.

That's idiotic. WGN America covers Cubs, Sox and Bulls games in competition with FOX, ESPN, TNT, etc.

What a crock. I'm too cheap to spring for Center Ice so I have to watch almost every game on my laptop.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
In my case this wouldn't matter since my hockey fix is Gamecenter Live...

But it does matter. My high school video productions crew does better camerawork than WGN!

I'm hoping part of the deal was a stipulation to fire their cameraman and replace him with someone who knows how to operate a video camera more advanced than one that take βetamax tapes.

And yes...the next time the TV deal comes around Bettman et. al needs to do away with the Vs. NBC exclusive bullshit.

Frank, if you have an inside track with Jahns, can you ask him to look into it for the Quad Cities market, too? I'll e-mail myself as well....

The problem may be that we don't have Comcast providing cable; it's Mediacom....

It's a contractual agreement with the NHL. It's so that one TV Market doesn't overlap another TV Market. I'm pretty sure it's always been this way with the NHL.

Don't have an inside track. Just tweeted him and then emailed him. I told him the assumption that it probably affects most of the Illinois market outside of Chicago. He said he'd look into it and might have something in a week or so. I'm not that optimistic that something will come of it besides possibly a story, but it's worth a shot.
