How do they work exactly? I'm pretty sure they run on gas and have a battery pack right? Do I have to charge the battery pack? I'm looking at getting one within the next year or so since my Monte just isn't all that great on gas (about 25-27 mpg hwy), and driving 45 miles each way for work is really putting a dent in my wallet.
The extra cost for a hybrid isn't recouped vs the gas version.

That'd be true if I were looking exclusively at one model of car. As it stands, all the cars I'm looking at would fall in the same general price range and the extra gas mileage would save me over $1,000 a year.

I've had a Prius for a decade, unlike my Chevy it hasn't given me much grief.

The only problem was finding a mechanic trained to work on hybrids after warranty expired, labor rates at dealerships are too high out of pocket.

Took a 700 mile trip this weekend with a friend who has a ten year old hybrid Camry. Nice car, though it seems like the cliche is true about the owners not being able to shut up about them. This car averaged about 39 mpg with three people doing roughly 80 mph between Albuquerque and Colorado Spgs. I would think if you were driving on flatter less windy terrain your mileage would be better. Also I've heard hybrids give you a bigger advantage in terms of economy commuting around town then driving cross country. My question about them would be this:

Does anyone really know what the battery life is? I mean if you're buying used should you worry about essentially having to throw the car away when it gets to 150k?

About 120K on my 2004 Prius, which was the first year of that model...replacement battery ran about $800 3 years ago. That was through a private mechanic, take a hybrid to the dealership and you will pay up to several thousand.

What Crys said is a good explanation. You could also get a diesel car.

I went from a smaller, gas equipped Mercedes 190E to a larger, turbocharged diesel equipped Mercedes 300D and get 5mpg better with an engine that isn't running optimally...yet. That's my next weekend project.

There are a lot of diesel vehicles that get incredible fuel economy. The diesel Jetta or Golf from Volkswagen come readily to mind but there are many more. Or there are, wait for it...diesel hybrids on the market now that get incredible fuel economy as well. I've only done a small amount of research on it but there is a Volvo diesel hybrid that Volvo claims 100mpg.

I'm a big fan of diesels. They are much more efficient, cheaper to own(over a long period of time), and will last longer if taken care of properly. Just some food for thought

How much of your gas milage savings is wiped out when you have to pay an extra 35-40 cents per gallon though?

The thing about having a good diesel vehicle, is that maintenance can be very cheap and the engine will last for ages. But that is a big difference between a good diesel and a bad one. Those Merc OM6x's for the most part are as reliable as you can get.

Another positive thing about the hybrids and natural gas vehicles is that out where I live (California), I can use the HOV lane even if I'm driving by myself. That's a huge benefit for me, as it can shave an hour or more off of my commute. That's actually more of a benefit to me than gas savings.

Not overlooked by me. One of the reasons I'm looking to get one. The other is the obvious immediate benefit to my pocket.

Is the amount you will save in gas going to be less than your monthly payment on the car loan? If not, in the end you aren't saving money.

Now, if you have saved up for the car or you are trading the Monte in to offset the cost your loan would obviously be less. Even still you would have to factor in the loan cost (assuming you aren't paying cash).

If I read correctly the Monte only has 80k miles on it. That really isn't bad at all.

I just don't know that your reasoning that it will save you money is sound if you are more than offsetting any gas savings with a car loan.

A $100 monthly gas savings doesn't make sense when you pick up a $400 car loan you didn't originally have.

I'm thinking long term, (even though I did say immediate LOL). By the time I get this car, I will have had the Monte for 10+ years. I'm not in dire need of a vehicle because of the Monte being in good condition, but when I do get one, the Monte will be traded or sold, and I will have cash saved up. I can't afford a car right now anyway because I'm still only part time. Been waiting to hear if I got a full time spot for almost a month now. These guys move painfully slow.

Sounds good man. Looks like you've got it thought out.

You should get a Porsche 918. They only cost like $850K.

**** hybrid drivers. I've had 2 of them lecture me on how I'm killing Earth because my van has a V10. They were unable to get that a V10 not working hard gets better mpg than a V8 working hard to move the same load.

The last two gas cars I drove always got at least mid-grade fuel from shell so I never had that drastic of a price difference. It's approximately 5 cents difference now where I'm at

That's exactly why I bought my car.

Someone from Virginia called about this car and was going to fly to Denver to buy it but I got there first. He had one with 750,000 miles on it but the body was getting shitty from living on the east coast and was looking to retire it soon

This should be the last commuter car I ever need to buy (knock on wood)
