Social engineering type stuff is the likely answer.
You have over 10k posts on here, and some dick very well could have zeroed in on your facebook based on your town or whatever.
Or, whatever adult chat room you are on, someone could have picked up on your town or your likes... or someone could have picked up your e-mail addy at any given site and searched the web for that....

there are probably a zillion little tidbits that you leave online that could lead a douchenozzle to your identity.

Shit- there was a message board I was part of about 15 years ago where some fellow got himself raked over the coals on a wrongful termination lawsuit, because be it fact or just a story he made up, he posted a story of a very clear violation of laws that led to him having to pay out serious bank.

Bottom line is that assholes can be crafty and there are ample ways for someone without a single computer savvy bone in their body can mess with you if you put too much information out there.

In your position, I would look back and see if you recall anyone trying to get information about hobbies or likes or interests or whatnot... if that is the path they took, to glean your facebook or whatever other accounts you have, then you may actually remember an odd or leading question that came from someone... and if that someone asked multiple odd or leading questions... then that will probably be your guy.

Or someone got a keylogger on Nick's machine, used it to get several of his accounts/passwords and then wreaked this havoc....

Not so easy to get people's passwords for all their accounts online via social engineering unless you use the same one for everything and they somehow got you to reveal it to them.

Social engineering you can get lots of info about people and their lives, but someone actually got into Nick's accounts.... to do that they would have needed his passwords.

A little off topic.... One of our friends texted us a few days ago. She was hiding in her house while her neighborhood was on lock down because of hostage situation. Long story short, one of her neighbor's kids had an online stalker who had a thing for her. She didn't return the "love" so this guy called 911 and said that there was a hostage situation at her house with the dad threatening to shoot the entire family. Complete bullshit story... but the whole neighborhood was on lockdown while a bunch of local cops and FBI had to sort shit out over the rest of the afternoon. All the while my friend and her family think one of her neighbors has gone nuts.

All this because of some whack job online.
