One of the things that irked me over the last few years was that most of the cubs players would swing at bad pitches and take good pitches. it was really annoying.

Thats exactly what Im talking about. In contrast, if you watch the Red Sox, they typically have a good pitches per at bat number. If you swing at bad pitches, its hard to work counts and tax the pitcher. Its both mental and physical.

Perhaps, but even if he does, it's incorrect to assume he would have done the same thing here.

That's true. But after his rookie season and this year you would have to assume he could bounce back from that atrocious BA and maybe regain his power and produce again.

i would argue another issue(maybe more prominent than plate discipline) is being able to get on base or hit at a higher rate w/risp...thats something i notice we struggle with a little as well

Colvin had a good year but was figured out rather quickly this season and wasn't able to adjust.... Plus he isn't even that young. Don't care one bit he's gone, should have sold high in the first place.

Here's Colvin's minor league stat line:

Tyler Colvin Minor League Statistics & History - Baseball-Reference.com

.275/.315/.466 across multiple levels in 2000+ plate appearances gives you a pretty good sample to judge by.

His MLB stat line is .215/.274/.422 in 600+ plate appearance so obviously he's got on-base issues. He has legit power but all those strikeouts suggest he has contact issues.

As a Rockie, Colvin will play in Colorado Springs and his minor league stats will balloon due to the environment. He should be okay in Denver where he'll have the thin air and less breaking pitches due again to the environment. But he still has to make contact to hit home runs.

This...Why does everyone think epstein can turn this around in 1 year?

3 years minimum to turn this around.I think epstein wont make the mistakes he made in boston in signing ridiculous contracts.

i think he will do more next offseason than this one just cause all the contracts that are ending after 2012.

Dempster
byrd
Zambrano
Soriano in 2 years

No way epstein/hoyer can turn this piss into gold in 1 year...give these men some time to do this right

2012 will be a bad year
2013 be better
2014 and beyond......contenders

time to lower expectations this year

Strikeouts are forgiveable provided there are also a lot of walks. At least that suggests they're workign the count. But when you have a lot of strikeouts and low walks, that suggests he's swinging at a lot of bad pitches early in the count. A strikeout can be a positive at bat if you can at least extend the pitcher, the numbers tell you that Colvin isn't doing that. He's getting in a lot of pitchers counts.

Why does everyone assume Cubs be good by 2014? Prospects rarely make it, Cubs need 23 changes to the roster. Only 2 guys worth a crap is Castro and Garza. System is not very good. All scouts say Cubs full of role players. Ricketts has shown he don't spend money like a big market should. There is no prove that Cubs be good in 2014. If it was that easy to rebuild then every team would. Now with new CBA its even harder. Please stop feeding yourself bullshit. Until Cubs start acting like a big market team will suck cause going after guys like Stewart, DeJusus etc Cubs will never win

I agree with you in being disappointed in lack of a big name so far, but not all 23 players can be the all-stars. The Yankees and Nick Swisher. The Cardinals and David Freese. Phillies and Raul Ibanez. The point is, there are role players, and those players are OK in small numbers. A team should not be built around role players. And I don't expect Theo to go that route.

Boston has a good track record of prospects.

Pedroia
Papelbon
Ellsbury
Lester

Used their prospects to acquire Adrian Gonzalez.

Not enthused by this move at all. I was really hoping for Headley. But this team is building for the future, so they've got time to pass.

206 years from now people like us will still be hoping and longing for a winning Cubs team. Ha Things people can never find. Bigfoot, Lach Ness Monster, Amelia Earhart and a Cubs World Series Trophy. Myths people. Myths.
