Question, what about ice size? Would it be useful to go bigger or smaller?

I think if you go bigger, you're gonna lose a lot of the physical play and the game will resemble more of a soccer style of possession and holding the puck more, instead of the quick counter attacks you see now. That's why a lot of guys who can cut it in the NHL due to speed end up doing well in Europe as it's not as fast and you have more room to maneuver. If you go smaller, you're gonna lose a lot of the finesse involved due to less room to maneuver, though the physicality will pick up since most guys will be running into each other more. I think there's a good balance now.

Good points trev.

Owners will never go bigger ice anyways. Not going to lose seats to make ice bigger in this league. If anything they would probably like the ice shortened so they can throw in another row of seats.

Imagine 3 on 3 ot on olympic ice though? That would be fun as ****.

Bigger.

That's what she said.

But yeah, bigger would open up the ice. But not 100% convinced it would increase scoring. Smaller would definitely reduce scoring.

So shorten up the ice, allow the two line pass and offsides. Boom... goals everywhere?

It worked so for 2-3 years, then the penalties, especially late ones, got called less and pad sizes even got an extra boost, though they came down "somewhat" last year but still they're extended.

I think the decrease in scoring is due to coaches having better tactics for the "New NHL". With teams no longer allowed to hook and grab like they did before (though players are getting away with more lately. Hell I watched Toews last night practically drag a guy back with a hook on the back check in the 3rd period), many of team have gone into a sagging defensive zone coverage. Plus more and more teams are using some variation of the trap forecheck and clogging things up more.

How does less hooking and grabbing lead to less goals? I would have though just the opposite?

I think there'd be more scoring if the players were allowed to skate with headphones on and listen to music that gets them pumped up.

At first we saw more scoring, but slowly the rules are being enforced more lenient and the little things that could slow down an offense are not consistently called.

Depth definitely is another attributing factor as star players are being asked to play as many shifts and it's not like every team has an AHL 4th line anymore.

The change is simple and so obvious I'm not sure why it hasn't happened. Start calling obstruction and interference penalties again. Start calling the clutching, grabbing, and hooking again. That's it. I guarantee scoring will increase.

I've got it, allow goals of kicked pucks. Goalies be damned!
