In 4 years if he is terrible will you be cunting or was this the right hire regardless?

Ben Johnson is in a quantum superposition right now. He is both an excellent coach and a complete failure at the same time. The act of the Bears hiring him will collapse that waveform, and not in the way we want.

If the next HC flops you’re setting the franchise back. Just get the hire right. If you get it wrong, that’s a failure, and someone is absolutely to blame (poles, mainly).
You don’t know if you got it right. It’s all a risk. Even if we get Andy Reid, he’s still has a set of new players. And 80% of those players aren’t superstars. Hard to make something happen with nothing.

How is Johnson a complete failure?

Many years ago when the Bears traded for Cutler I applauded the decision. When the trade was made I said if it doesn't work out I can't blame the front office because at least they took a big swing.

I feel the same way about Ben Johnson. He is the consensus big name offensive guy out there this cycle. If the Bears hire him and he bombs I won't be too upset because by hiring him you're taking a big swing. Let's go for it!
That’s exactly how I feel about it. However, I remember when the big fish number one obvious choice was Bruce Arians and we let him walk out the building to hire Mark Trestman.

No those posters will get @hyatt151 levels of dementia and act like they never liked Ben Johnson, and say we should have hired some random guy who ended up having success.
my dementia, give me a break I made a thread on this board prior to the start of this season asking what everybody thought of the bears chances of making the playoffs were and around 99 % said yes, when I brought this up later a poster claimed it was less then 5% that thought they would so when you accuse one of dementia or denial take a long hard look at your favorite CCS fan base

There seems to be a consensus that he is the right guy.
I wouldnt say he or anyone else short of Andy Reid, Harbaugh, Sean Payton are the right hire.

I think Johnson is a sensible hire based on the information you're able to gather. Sort of like a player in the draft. Sometimes they check every box but it just doesn't pan out.

If they hire McCarthy, who isn't my first choice and I do have criticisms with, I will still support the hire and even be optimistic with it.

Just no more Trestmans, Fox's and Eberflus's. Matt Eberflus was the Shea McClellin of HC hires. It came out of nowhere with zero logical reasons to make the hire.

I swear that the Eberflus hire was Ted Phillips giving this fanbase and the front office the finger one last time on his way out the door.

If it's Johnson or McCarthy I can at least respect the organizations reasoning for making either hire even if it does go south.

Never actually watched it. Been meaning to.

He's not. Yet. We'll see how he does now that he's a Bear is the point.

Don't get me wrong, he would have been my pick too, and I'm glad they made an offer and he accepted. I just hope the Bears don't rub off on him instead of the other way around.

Then why did you call him a complete failure?

It was a physics joke.

And to answer the thread - I **** with this decision. Good on the Bears for landing their guy and if we continue to go bargain bin shopping at OL I'll understand that it's all bullshit and probably will fail but if they bring in 2 legit starters (at the very least) along the OL I'll be happy and hyped for the season.

Johnson is who I wanted so I'm good with the hire. Now, it doesn't mean he's immune from criticism but I do think he was the best available option which is far different than 3 years ago. If it doesn't work, at least you went out there and swung for the fences with a guy a lot of teams wanted. Not some dude that was going to be fired if he wasn't hired as your head coach.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Bears need at least 2 OL starters next year. I personally think IOL. Jones and Wright can be solid if the interior OL is serviceable.

I gotta imagine Poles and Johnson had a serious talk about how they will improve the OL. If Poles les nothing in the offseason I think he needs to be fired asap.

I said the same thing with Caleb - idk if Ben Johnson will work out but he really is the obvious best candidate. I will not **** about the bears hiring him even if he busts in 2 years.

I haven’t been sold on him the entire time and I’m still not sold on him as a HC
The logic for hiring him is obvious. But I’m not gonna jump up and down until I see the product. Been through this one too many times before.

Dude kinda gives me Adam gase vibes

I would hope that the front office is better than I am at making decisions like these. The hire seems good from my perspective, but I'm just some asshole on his couch.
