If Toews Had To Retire Today

If Toews retired today, do you think the Blackhawks should retire his number?

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Fire
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Arizona Wildcats
If he came out today and retired, no #19 would not be retired

I really can't make an argument on the Roenick thing because I was only coherent about hockey when he played here in AZ

How much more success does Toews need to be up in the rafters?

I'll skip over the bullshit because I'm here to talk hockey.

The issue I have with this discussion is that it is an overreaction to a current injury that no one is sure of. People aren't even sure of the severity much less the actual injury (shoulder or concussion?).

Roenick was my favorite player growing up but he does not deserve to have his number retired. Who cares that he is a 500 goal scorer, this is about what he did with the Blackhawks not over his entire career. Bondra was a 500 goal scorer in the Blackhawks uniform, and hell atleast he was in a Blackhawks uniform when he did it while Roenick wasn't.

Roenick played in 524 games in his Blackhawks career...not long enough in my eyes. Pit Martin, Dennis Hull, Doug Wilson, and Steve Larmer all have more points than Roenick in a Blackhawks uniform and do not have their numbers retired.

Roenick did not win a Stanley Cup in his time in Chicago. Roenick played over half of his career in other cities.

Add all that up and Roenick doesn't deserve to have his number retired by the Blackhawks.

you are comparing the career of bondra with the hawks to the career of roenick with the hawks? he played 37 games with the hawks. So nice try and a horrible comparison. 8 seasons vs 37 games

1)his best OPS and DPS Was with the hawks

2) 267 goals of his 513 came in a hawks uniform....just an FYI

you want more?

Clearly you failed to recognize that I was mocking your argument of Roenick having 500 goals. Since only about half of those goals came in a Blackhawks uniform, it doesn't matter that he had 500 because it wasn't all with the Blackhawks and even #500 was not with the Blackhawks.

I don't care that his best OPS and DPS was with the Hawks. First off, you put way too much weight into those stats. Second, he was here for only 8 years...not long enough and didn't have a big enough influence over those 8 years to have his number retired. It is about what Roenick did with the Blackhawks, not in his NHL career.

You swayed away from every stat that I posted.

what stat?

you dont like ops and dps because you dont understand it.

Were you even alive for the Roenick ERA? What he did for the game and for Chicago Hockey was amazing, without him the 7000 people going to arnason games would be zero if he didnt bring in more fans from the era before. Thats fact. Im not talking HOF Im talking about retiring a number. no one sways from you and your half ass debates. more than half of his goals are indeed with the hawks, and 8 seasons of a huge contribution to the chicago blackhawks, their fans for sure grant him a rafter hang. you do know its not always about stats at all or your "what you see" shit right? its what they did for the specific franchise, their fan base along with the stats. The impact of a doug wilson was no where near the impact roenick had on chicago and their fans. combine the stats and influence with roenick and you have a retired number all day long.

You clearly failed to read the post where I said that Roenick was my favorite player growing up. Yes I was alive for the Roenick era. He was my favorite player yet I still say his number shouldn't be retired. In my opinion, Roenick didn't do enough in his time with the Blackhawks to have his number retired. No Stanley Cups, not enough games, not enough goals, not enough seasons, not enough overall influence. Amazing player and I wish he would have been a lifer, but it didn't work out and his number isn't hanging in the rafters right now for a reason. Should Chelios have his number retired? What about Amonte? Belfour? All those players were around in that era and virtually where here for around the same number of seasons. All those guys should miss the cut in having their numbers retired. Roenick was big but so were those guys, so saying "without him" really isn't accurate because there were plenty of other big names in Chicago during that era.

big names vs big names with influence on the fandom. Belfour was great, chelios etc. No one in that era had any influence like he had.

LOL @ the no stanley cup. please dude.

i bet in the next 2 years roenick will get his number retired? sig bet?

Would people be saying yes to Toews/Crosby at this point if they didn't have one?

I'm not doing a 2 year sig bet. No way does Roenick get his number retired though, so do whatever bet you want to in your head.

If Toews retired today, then hell no he hasn't earned the right for his number to be retired. He is though on the right track.

Now that we're way off topic, the two biggest question marks I have about the Rags is their goaltending and offense.

Really? I think Lundquivst is going to be just fine in playoffs. He's a great goalie.

I sort of agree about the offense, though. If Callahan comes back soon that makes a big difference, but they don't have a big offense like the Pens, Bruins, and Senators.

Aye. Lundqvist is a great goalie, but he has a strong, strong tendency of tapering off during the playoffs mostly due to overwork. We'll see if Fonzie's plan (which he mentioned in 24/7) to decrease Lundqvist's workload works out this season. He's at 48 gp with with 18 left.

I agree there, but with the decreased workload this year, as you mentioned, he could be better in the playoffs. That and their defense is pretty dang good this year. This Rangers team is far better than it has been in the past couple years.

If Lundqvist performs well in the playoffs, they are probably in the finals.

I could still see them having a tough time with Bahston and Shitsburgh.

You'd swear the Blackhawks we're a winning franchise the way you talk about who deserves to have their number retired or not.

Although I'm not a huge fan of retiring numbers. If Toews had to retire today I couldn't disagree with retiring the number of our best player and first Stanley Cup winning captain in 49 years. I love Jeremy Roenick, but it's all about winning in this league and Toews is the only one to do it.
