Ray Whitney? He's like 500 years old... and was playing in Kansas City (on the Blades) when I was in KC ... as a young guy in the early 90's...

I like Ray though ... a real battler -never was a big guy, always has flown under the radar apart from teams he's been on ... and I have no idea why the Hawks never looked into getting hold of him (as I said- he's been around the NHL since the early 90's)...

Ok.. Aucoin -well yes, he was captain - mainly because there was no leadership material on the immediate post-lockout Hawks --and in fact was Dale Tallon's trophy signing from the post lockout period -he and Khabibulin (who'd been the goalie for the then cup winning Lightning). . . so, yes, "team built in Dale's image guys" - the fact is Dale had to rebuild the team built in Dale's image a few times if anyone care's to look into things.

Vrbata wasn't bad in Chicago considering what nothingness they gave up to get him -the fact is the entire team sucked back then - he just managed to be a young guy sucking on a team that sucked and drew little to no interest -- not his fault imo. It happens though...

One of former GM Mike Smith's many failures IIRC.

Nope- he was one of Tallon's first big moves... Smith was long gone.

Tallon was hired on 21 Jun 2005 -Aucoin was signed in August of that year.

___

Doesn't matter though -- in playoff hockey - the key thing is to get the home ice advantage -either going in to series - as ASAP ... winning one of the first 2 on the road is the easiest and best way to take the pressure off.

Of course you have to then follow it up with winning the next 2 at home.

So, I know some guys were saying this one was a 'must win' -and while technically it wasn't (mathematically speaking) ; however it does make things a bit easier in a best of 7 series where you are trying to shift the pressure to the other guy's. I guess 'm not a big fan of leaving things too late...

Hawks captain Jonathan Toews conferred with the on-ice officials while Smith lay on the ice and Shaw sat in the penalty box. Toews said the referees took Smith's condition into account when deciding to give Shaw more than a two-minute minor.

"I don't know if it came down to whether the officials thought Smith was going to stay in the game or not," Toews said. "Obviously, they thought he was done and that's probably why we got the five-minute penalty.

The win makes that fucked call a lot easier to digest. Ditto with the goalie interference on Toews. That one might have actually been more ridiculous.

So, I was only watching the score update on the internet since i didn't get the game...and w/ about 2 minutes left I just turned it off out of frustration - and went to bed.

After watching the highlights and lmmfao at the posts on here (not b/c everyone was wrong, but b/c I was saying the exact same things to myself during the game) I feel like this needs to be posted and sung loudly.

Do Work, 'Hawks fans.

That one was more ridiculous. Toews was clearly slowing down and stopped outside of the blue paint when Smith lunged at Toews to initiate contact. While I don't doubt that Smith embelished that hit, you still have to avoid contact with the keeper. Was that penalty a 5 minute major, kicked out of the game, and probably suspended? I don't think so, but at least there is an argument for that being called a penalty as opposed to the Toews play.
