So, today is the day my classes restart for college. Tuesday are going to be horrible days where I go from 11 A.M to 9 P.M. I should go today but its the first day and attendance doesnt count against you in the first week. I think Ill just go Thursday when classes really start. First day is just a bunch of fluff BS. Am I wrong on this?

Yes, if you don't show up the first day, it sets up a bad first impression. Syllabus week is easy.

That said we've spent a half hour trying to figure out how to play a movie :andruw:

A bad first impression? Hmm I plan on not speaking to my teachers all semester anyway.

I've always found the first day is the easiest to get away with missing. The profs are attempting to figure out who several hundred new students are (even more if it's a large lecture gen-ed that may have several hundred people per class) and you'll just slip through the cracks, not to mention that you're not going to do anything important anyhow. That, and if one does notice, you can just play the "oh, I got lost" card.

Good point. One of the many drawbacks of going to a small liberal arts college, everyone knows everyone.

I had a 10am CS Architecture course where I used to go not because the lectures were particularly useful but because I had a 9am before it and a 11am after all in the same area of campus, but the lectures got to be boring enough that I played out a few long campaigns in the game "Sins of a Solar Empire" on my laptop in that lecture.

I also remember many people going to lectures and quite literally just falling asleep before it started and then waking up as it let out.... same people did it, every day like clockwork.... other people had shows they would catch up on in the same classes every week.... alot of this shit goes on in college.... its just the nature of it now.... I am not justifying it mind you.... I probably should have done more useful things in that lecture and lots of people should do more useful things in lots of lectures.... but college is a place where you learn how to manage your time, all of it, entirely on your own.... so IMO shit like this are the errors that we eventually learn from or fail because of....

This is irrelevant now, but if it's a large class you're probably not missing anything. Smaller classes I'd go to...then Fisch's thing about impressions starts to play in. My 2 cents after the fact xD

Depends on the class, I have college algebra and stats back to back, and the first day she started going over the first chapter and handed out a take home quiz that was due next week. Then some other classes I have taken you get the syllabus and your on your way.

That's only 1200 more than it costs at Northeastern which is why I'm glad the VA pays for my college. Of course, if I don't graduate (on track to do so at the end of Fall this year) I have to pay that money back.

Don't say shit like that fisch.... Congress will take it as a challenge and show you a new meaning of "least we can do" lol

Random Congressman: "I heard a young man in Iowa say he thinks we couldn't do less than what we are currently doing for our Veterans"
Random Congressman 2: "Huzzah! That sounds like a challenge! Draw me up a bill to make all military uniforms out of wool infused with itching powder.... I shall show this young so-and-so from Iowa how little I can do!"

Peak attendance is basically the first day, tests, and the final lol. After the first two weeks for non-compulsory,lecture hall-style classes, attendance drops. It's weird though, because people seem to miss class more when the lectures are important(i.e. when newer and more difficult material is covered). You could honestly get away with missing the first week or two in quite a few classes. All of this depends on the class though.

People pack the first lecture often to make sure they hear about any relevant policy stuff they need to be aware of and also honestly people go the first couple lectures to figure out whether the lectures are worth going to or not.

I had many CS classes where the lecture hall was packed with 300 people the first week and honestly by the middle of the semester there were only 10-20 people at each lecture in this big ass lecture hall because the lectures were so useless. Some professors, at least in my major, were so bad at teaching that their lectures were next to useless.... you learned way more just doing assignments and figuring shit out yourself.
