I think it is very likely. Historically the Bears pick out their best player on a bad roster and do everything they can to get rid of him. Thomas Jones, Greg Olson, Matt Forte, Khalil Mack just for some examples. Not surprisingly, the fan base is on board looking to ditch Montgomery and Roquan Smith lol.

Roquan Smith is elite-yet-overrated and probably isn't worth the money. Meanwhile David Montgomery legitimately was held back by a bad coach with a bad offense and has found himself being pretty underrated by the league at large.

Jones was a cap casualty
Mike Martz didn't like Greg Olson and Lovie didn't veto the idea so fail all around.
Matt Forte suited up 8 seasons with the Bears and was only able to play 2 moar seasons in the nfl before his body called it quits
Khalil Mack wasn't worth 30 million cap hit

NEXT!

this will all depend on what monty is looking to get paid at...its always about the money with a player's first real payday...

He's actually a poor fit for the run scheme that Getsy wants to use. He's not particularly good at being decisive or just the one cut and go. I love Monty but Poles probably moves on in 2023. I wouldn't be surprised to see a late round pick used on a RB in this draft as well.

I'd certainly like Monty back, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the new staff incorporates him in the passing game. I'd like to see the number of targets go up. That and we need to give Justin an outlet to dump off too. If he can get 3-5 targets a game then I'd be even more inclined to pay him.

Herbert hits the hole a lot quicker.

If they get some bruisers on the offensive line in this draft and Teven Jenkins pans out I could see him having a monster season. I'm not at all opposed to paying him, either. The Bears have the cap flexibility and I don't think runningbacks as good as him can reliably be found after the top fifty or so picks. I don't question his durability or offseason work ethic, so the risk is relatively low.

The way I see it is you pay the guy as a way of buying back your second or third round pick in 2023. If David Montgomery departs in free agency it will likely create a pretty pressing need at the position and the Bears will likely have to part with a draft pick to address it.

And I just flat out like the guy and the way he plays. Would like to see him stay in the uniform, I'm not unbiased when it comes to Montgomery.
Agreed, good RB's that aren't diva's are hard to find, versatile, will have a big year being used properly and George likes him!!

I think it's a joke. I don't give a **** about a majority of the things people say here, particularly personal attacks, because none of you even really know me. so you shouldn't care either. sidenote: you know what triggers me? when someone makes a post about how they "feel" about something. why do you people feel so fucking much?

moving on, Montgomery (his name, not some shorthand fucking Monty Mole from Super Mario World nickname) was handicapped in a bullshit offense the entirety of his time with the team up until this point. I think if he trends up even higher this season, a solid argument could be made for retaining him a few years longer. obviously once you hit that 30 year mark the bottom falls out with a majority of runningbacks. he's capable of putting up decent enough numbers, and spare me the trivia about the 17 game season, it shouldn't even fucking be 17 games.

he's not quite Forte, but close enough. he still hesitates for that split second at the snap but even that's improved since a couple years ago. obviously the position is the easiest to replace, but finding another player that offers what he does and also not be a **** at the same time is the greater challenge.

this thread will persist until about 8 pages and then the draft circle jerk will commence after. have a blessed day everyone.
