Well curling is an Olympic sport... so yes I guess...

Shhhhhhhhhhhh....

Lady bowlers look like large marge. But have you seen some of the lady curlers? It's like a requirement that every team has one cutie, and every 4 teams, one hottie. I'll watch that shit all day.

If you realize the amount of sheer work professional gamers put into it then you can appreciate it as a "sport." However the problem that people always seem to have with calling something a sport is that they want to give a comparison to "traditional sports" which is probably one of the dumbest things they can do. When I grew up, competitive gaming was a cool thing that was mostly done to say you're one of the best. It didn't provide a living wage or any benefits except for the elite few who managed to make a brand of themselves and gain sponsorship as well as income from borrowing your brand name to companies manufacturing gaming peripherals.

Fast forward to modern day competitive gaming which is being flooded by investment capitalists, former and current athletes, former e-sports athletes and major corporations trying to get in at the ground level of e-sports. Things have changed in a massive way. If a player can break out of the semi-pro level and into the professional level then they can in fact be making six figure salaries ez pz between their contract with their respective gaming organization and income from streaming on twitch.

The games which garner the most attention in e-sports to the tune of million dollar+ tournaments are League of Legends, DOTA2, Counter Strike Global Offensive (which I play obsessively), and more recently Overwatch has been gaining a massive following since its launch. Gaming isn't some nerd shit anymore. Its very possible to earn a comfortable living as a professional player. These guys also happen to put in thousands of hours of hard work and grinding to get to that level. Its not uncommon to see professional gamers put in 10-14 hours of total gaming in a day's "work."

TL;DR: Yes

If you had to guess, how many people are really making 100,000 dollars a year or more by gaming? And what percentage of hardcore gamers that WANT TO be a professional gamer are successful enough to have that as their career and live comfortably? I am not degrading gamers. I am just curious as to the success rates. I know with things like poker players, painters/artists, musicians, even lawyers, there are a lot of struggles with most people and a lot of them throw their life away chasing a dream. I know with gaming, there are a lot of channels out there on youtube of people broadcasting themselves playing and each video can get over 100,000 views. I never understood the fascination with watching other people play rather than playing yourself, but it's a reality.

I'm not sure if it's a sport or not but those drivers are physically and mentally gifted. To sometimes drive 600 miles going 180mph all while being within inches of a car on each side is something not just anyone could do.

I don't agree and will explain why.
To many father son drivers.
It's a family business.
However Walter Payton or Michael Jordan or Jack Nicholas son are not likely to make the pro level.

I hate NASCAR but it does require a lot of physical stamina, skill, and concentration.

That being said it's probably the lamest, most boring sport there is and I'd prefer watching people playing video games to a 3 hour left turn.

The real question should be is NASCAR entertaining?

I'm not sure how they can go that long without taking a piss. That alone should make it a sport.

Yeah, totally makes no sense. Not like millions of people currently watch Football, Soccer, Baseball, Hockey etc. etc on TV and pile into stadiums instead of playing it themselves. #IwillNeverUnderstand

As for gaming, there are thousands of players that earn that much money at the pro level. Much like traditional sports, only the elite enjoy the lavish salaries, sponsorships and Twitch viewerships. More so than anything else it has a lot to do with the organization/team they represent. If you're playing for a famous org then you will by virtue be blessed with tons of fans purely by default. Even still outside of playing for a famous org there are still people that are pumping in money into e-sports trying to make a name for themselves and paying players quite well despite them not being elite talents. I don't think you realize how much money is currently flowing in e-sports. The global e-sports market last year was to the tune of 750 Million with projections to meet or exceed 1.9 Billion by 2018. I wasn't blowing smoke when I said money is being pumped into this market from all over the place.

Per my definitions, it's a sport:

It's physically taxing at some level--be it strength, endurance, or dexterity.

A person or a group of people are in direct competition with each other.

Each person or group of people are playing by the same rules, and winning and losing mean the same to all sides.

The person or group of people directly influence the performance of the other competitors.

Scoring and/or winning is based on a hard and fast objective, rather than something subjective--like a judges ruling.
