Ross is up...I guess the only thing to do is to hope for a strikeout instead of a double play

OK, I won't pretend it was something it wasn't. Bryant had two soft singles for his first two hits.

But the kid came to the plate 6 times, and got on base 5. Following a three K game with 3 walks is certainly not a bad sign.

Looking forward to watching tomorrow - the game is on MLB Network - and seeing his first HR. :)

@matthewpouliot: According to B-Ref PI, Kris Bryant is 18th player since 1914 to reach base 5 times in one of his first two career games.

And he will likely lead the team in 9th inning doubles in the month of August.

Alcantara is a joke. Anyone defending this guy needs their head examined. Beckdawg called Alcantara a "monumental success" story in another thread. LMAO

I never once said he was a monumental success story.

Nice to see Hendricks bounce back today even if the bullpen blew the win for him. 2 runs in 6 with 8 K's is a pretty decent start.

Also notice how the strike that wasn't called correctly benefitted the Cubs today.

Bryant will walk a ton and will k a ton. The difference will be his contact rate. If he can get it up to 80 percent. He will be a superstar

I'm still not 100% sold that this will the case. Obviously it appears to be where we are headed but it's unusual for players who walk at the rate he does to put up those kind of K's especially with the average he managed to obtain in the minors. Typically the players who do tend to be 3 true outcome types. Bryant doesn't appear to be that either. I would throw out the idea that his k rate is slightly inflated due to his fast ascension. The most he's seen at any level was 297 PAs in AA/AAA which isn't much time to adjust.

Edit: just wanted to clarify this a bit. High K rate is definitely possible. I'm just saying I'm not 100% sold he's going to be a 27%+ guy in the majors. I think he has a shot to be in the 20-25% range.

He has a better eye at the plate than Baez. Taking 3 BB's means alot. The wind was blowing to RF and Ross was pounding him inside and he took those pitches because he was not going to get jambed into hitting into the teeth of the wind.

He is pretty advanced as a hitter at this stage and he is only going to get better.

Only 2 starts in, but have to like what we've seen from the back of the rotation. Been better than the top

Hopefully Lester pitches his 1st gem as a Cub tomorrow and we can take the series

Difference between yesterday and today. .

Yesterday he was over anxious and Shields exploited it and made Bryant chase after junk out of zone..

Today he pretty much laid off the junk...

I don't. I think he will strike at 30 percent or more because of his style. Shields worked him because he wAits for the perfect pitch. If he can adjust to a good enough pitch, then I see it. Until he does it, he is going to k at a mark Reynolds rate

A quick note on the 9th inning with Coke and Rondon. While somewhat annoyed, I wasn't that upset about it. Sometimes major league hitters hit major league pitchers...it's not the first time and won't be the last. It's part of the game. What I did like is that they forced them to swing the bat and not walk anybody. That's what drives me nuts....Marmol used to make me crazy with his walks and beanballs. They threw strikes but got hit...it happens.
