Just looking at WAR alone and looking at the IP Arrieta would have been over 6 if he had Shark's IP this year.

Across the board Jake was the better starter. Except for BB/9 which Jeff went from a 3.23 career avg and nose dived this year.

Shark did improve this year but not to the extent Jake did.

It is like comparing taking 2 steps up vs jumping the whole flight.

2013: Garza: 6-1 3.17 ERA FIP: 3.78 xFIP: 3.82 K/9 7.86 BB/9 2.84 That was his big sale year. Not even close to those 2.

2012: Dempser: 5-5 2.25 ERA But FIP: 3.43 xFIP: 3.72 k/9: 7.18 BB/9: 2.89

That is why FIP tells the true tale. Both regressed after their big years. But their FIP's looked mundane.

Shark went from a MOR into a cost effective TOR in FA. That is it. He is not in the big $$$ area.

Jake is under control right now and it is a good thing because he would be looking a big payday with Boras as his rep.

Wonder if the Cubs will entertain the idea of signing Samardzia next offseason. A lot probably depends on how this offseason plays out

Arrieta and Hendricks were both unreal this year. Not sure if Hendricks is sustainable, but I believe Arrieta's success is.

I was against the idea of trading Samardzija in July just because of how well Arrieta was pitching. Would have been awesome to enter next season with Lester (maybe) , Arrieta, Samardzija, Hendricks in the rotation. However Russell is probably the most polished prospect the Cubs have, so not going to complain a lot on that one.

I would go the other way and wonder if Samardzija would entertain the idea of signing with the Cubs next off-season.

That is why you look at FIP and xFIP. Then SO/9 and BB/9. Those stats are more stable.

I did say he is set up as a cost effective TOR. He should get at most 150 mil but he is not in the 200+ range that Schzer should get.

Another thing: Name 1 year that Shark was the best starter on his team?

Hammels then Arreta were better than him this year.
Last year Wood, Feldman and Garza
year before Dempster was better.

On the A's staff:
Lester: FIP: 3.13
Shark: 3.23
Kasmir: 3.41
Gray: 3.50
Chavez: 3.89

The props I give to Shark is he is durable. That means allot. He improved his BB/9 but it cost him 1SO/9. Which is a fair trade IMO.

Still I wouldn't over pay for him. Sox should because they have a legit ace and Shark would be a good cost effective 1A.
