Carl Edwards has a career 3.06 ERA and has been under 3 the past two seasons. Get off the ledge.

That might be true, yet he is extremely unreliable. You never know what you're going to get from him. And there is no in between. He's either great or absolute shit.

Because 1game equals a whole season right?

I think we need to see at least 10 games.

10 games? He's been doing this shit for the past 2 seasons. What more do you need to see? You need to see him blow more valuable games against bad teams?

I'm not gonna go through another fucking season of Darvish and Edwards blowing games for us. I'm not gonna fucking do it.

Then stop watching games. You bitching and moaning it about it on game 2 isn't changing anything. The team made their choice. Either support the team or don't.

I support the team, but this game made me very uncomfortable about pitching this year.

One of the major unanswered questions about this season was will Darvish recover. He certainly didn't look like it yesterday, and his confidence has seemed pretty fragile lately. Not good.

We don't know the reasons who but a pitcher tossing a turd is not unheard of. Again we need a body of work to go by. Even Chatwood last year took until June to show his stripes.

1 game is not a season. Give it to June with these guys. By then they should balance out and we will know what we have going into the dead line.

People will still be making excuses for Darvish and Edwards if they still suck by June. Don't fucking kid yourself.

Losing FB command like that is not characteristic of Darvish. The rest of the stuff looked fine, actually better than that. It took 58 pitches to make contact. We see this again and I’ll worry, until then I’ll see how he looks next time. There’s no explanation for CJ except bad. You really have to question at this point if he'll ever be consistent enough to be counted on.

I don't think it helps having Contreras out there with him. I mean obviously Contreras is a hell of a player but he doesn't strike me as an even tempered guy. I feel like someone in Edwards situation could really do with someone like Ross. That is to say someone who can calm him down.

People used to say this about Strop, and he turned into one of the finest relievers in the game and Cubs history.

He didn't have command of his fastball and not giving his outing an excuse but he really wasn't missing by much..
I mean some of those pitches were even strikes according to the chart but called balls, so given that it was his first start in almost a year and it was against a former team, let see how he responds in his next start before giving up on him this year..

Positive we can take from this game was Quintana, he came in and looked pretty good in that situation...
Hopefully he can carry that into his start next week against the Brewers

Agree, I love Contreras but I really thought they were gonna go out and get a veteran defensive catcher (good framer) to help guys like Darvish and Quintana who like last night are close to the zone but need help showing it..

As far as Edwards goes, he reminds me of that kid Carmine from the bad news bears with all his deliveries..
when a guy starts experimenting with different types of deliveries, that when you know he has no confidence and messed up mentally

I just think this focus on his Jansen impersonation screws him up when he goes back to the windup. Edwards just gives us flashes, never gets consistent.
This is the Maddon madness, game 2, Stevie C in the third inning, while we thought Chatwood was the long man and then he leaves Q in too long. It would be nice to see how these pitchers would perform if they actually had roles. About the only smart thing he did was at least let Q start a clean inning, even though it cost Stevie C.
Maybe Yu could get Schwarber as a battery mate.

I think not having a true catcher is hurting us. But I will never, ever figure out why some people think Schwarber is a catcher and he would help the situation.

Welcome to little league, guys. Everybody plays!!

And welcome back to "Sundays with Joe", where we play scrubs every Sunday, because....well, just because.

Now don't give me shit for "panicking", as I certainly am not. It's only Descalso and Caritini, and that's not the worst thing. But the message is clear: Guys who aren't starter quality will play on Sundays. And don't try to understand a role. You'll be bounced all around the lineup so you can't get comfortable. It's a "Joe thing".

That's my entry to the "Doom and gloom" thread we have.

I don't have much of an issue with Descalso. I mean sure he didn't really have much of a spring but he had a 111 wRC+ last year. So, not like he's a total void out there. As for Caratini, sorta goes with the territory. Contreras can't play every game. Plus you still have the bats they are replacing for ph situations.

Frankly, this is how i want to see Joe rest people. This is way better IMO than dumping all your subs in one game. Comparative to last year this line up would have had like Bote and Zag also in it. Least this way when you're resting some guys you have most of your competent offense in there.

With the guys he has on the bench now, none of them should get more then one start a week to keep fresh..

It should be as simple as getting Contreras a day off one time through the rotation to keep him fresh.

Zobrist getting his two days off every week, so that when we should see Descalso and Bote get starts.

Zagunis should only get starts against LHers for either Schwarber or Heyward

Obviously he can use them to give Baez Bryant Rizzo and Almora a rest day when needed
