He was showing more discipline in the box earlier in the season. Seems like he's trying to much now.

I can see them bringing him back because he is a lefty, can spot start, go long, or get some outs.

He is versatile, familiar, and he will be fairly inexpensive.

I'd like the Cubs to get another guy for the pen like Tyler Clippard or something to go along with the young arms that will be coming of age.

A lefty specialist would be good too, but they may have to trade for one.

He had no hitters into the 7th like 3 times last year and didn't get one. It's crazy to think the O's sorta just gave up on him now.

Just shows how good Bosio is.

What amazing is that the stuff has always been there, the change was to his release point and if you watch film from his Baltimore days and compare it is dramatic. Bosio had him working on changing it within a week of getting to Chicago and everything since has been working on mastering it and getting command of all his pitches. Here's the thing, it isn't always that easy to get a guy to change something he's always done that dramatically and even more difficult for the guy to not only do it but achieve that kind of command from the new approach. It's been a perfect storm of coaching and hard work on Arrieta's part.

Actually it was too many voices and over-coaching in Baltimore. Bosio wanted Jake to be Jake. It happens a lot in the pros.

I read a long piece earlier this year on the release point and how it was the first thing Bosio brought up with him. I can't find the article now, if I find it later I'll post. I don't disagree with you though it very well could have been over-coaching. Something wasn't right there as Jake was literally better immediately in Chicago.

I was aware of it previously, but JD mentioned it on a broadcast a week or two ago regarding a conversation he had with Arrieta last Fall. He was listening to a bunch of people in the Baltimore organization regarding what he needed to work on (every pro wants to be successful and not considered uncoachable) and they were all different voices with different things to change. They didn't want him throwing across his body either (I think on the ESPN broadcast last night they showed in slomo how he strides out very closed to he right side), etc. Yes. Bosio has offered some tweaks including release point, but Bosio wanted him to be comfortable with his style. This is one of the things that makes Bosio a very good coach, IMHO. It isn't about him and what he needs to see. It's about the player.

I don't follow the O's much but I've read some stuff that suggested the O's for whatever reason didn't want him throwing his Slider/Cutter which this season has been the 4th best in the game if you exclude Simon, Buehrle, Dickey and Price who've all thrown under 10 sliders and more likely that was a missed classification by pitch f/x. Only pitchers with better sliders this year are Grienke, Liriano, and Keuchel.

Good stuff. Bosio has pretty quickly become one of the best pitching coaches in the game and I think you're right on the reason. The other thing of course is confidence and you touched on that. Arrieta did not look confident in Baltimore and he's more than that here. This guy believes he's going to dominate every time out and usually does. It really has been a remarkable performance that has revealed him to be a true ace and even more importantly a stopper. I know a lot of people bristle at that word thinking it's old fashioned but when you have a guy than can prevent long losing streaks and gives a team a boost when they are not at their most confident I don't think the performance can be overstated.

Unless the Cubs plan on moving Wood into a role as a lefty specialist or a full reliever, I can't see the Cubs offering him a deal in arbitration. His bullpen numbers have been good but five million for a role that's low leverage (and he's been fairly low leverage all year) doesn't make a ton of sense for a team that may be spending a lot on guys.

That kind of cash is relatively cheap for a pitcher who can relieve long or short and spot start. Also remember he throws left handed. Think he's back nest season.

Plus, what did they offer Wada this year when they brought him back? 4 Million?

Not that Wood is the greatest in the world, but I think the way Maddon likes to interchange parts, the fact that Wood could pinch hit for the Cubs might be something too.

He does hit well for a pitcher.

Different organizations don't like their pitchers to throw certain kind of pitches. I came across this the other day while reading something. The O's don't let any of their pitchers coming through their system throw cutters or something to that affect. Its really weird. Its like a team philosophy thing. Its weird.

It isn't that weird. I bet they feel that the increased use of the cutter may be a big reason for the increase in arm injuries at the pro level.

Yeap! I wouldn't have had to have Carpal Tunnel surgery after all those years of playing with myself had I actually listened to people who knew better. :fap:
