What would it take to get deGrom from the Mets?

More than what it took to get Quintana. Elite SP, still young-ish/prime, two years of control. Plus, you're buying high. He's not as good as his ERA indicates this year.

I thought Q, Russell and Happ. Or equivalent sized to buy 2 years.

Payroll wise:

Q: 19:$10.5M club option ($1M buyout), 20:$10.5M club option ($1M buyout) So both starters hold the same control.
But it would cost more from the Cubs due to a top 5 SP vs a top 50

DeGrom and Syndergaard will be a good test for the offense

If you continue to trade 3 for 1's and water down your team...that's an absolute recipe for disaster. They've already did a number on their minor league system with Torres, Jimenez and Cease being moved. OK, Torres arguably netted a WS but all the other two got you was a 4th or 5th unreliable starter. **** that. If you can't buy some, Try and develop your own pitching for a change....

That trade doesn't make sense for the Mets. If you're dealing DeGrom it's because you're blowing it up except for Syndergaard. Taking Quintana in return would be a win-now move. They're going to want a stud arm or young, cost-controlled SP in return, of which the Cubs have none.

As with all the potential Machado trades, the Cubs just don't have want the other side needs/wants.

If you are talking value you are getting a starting SS and a SH bat also. Happ plenty of control and Russell 3 years of control.

Now I do not believe the Cubs deal here just because they have control over Hamels, Darvish and a year control of Smyly. It is almost like the rich helping the poor.

There is value there, but not nearly enough to get it done. You're talking about an elite-level SP, and that's a high-demand, very low density asset. The cost goes up exorbitantly.

I dont see the mets trading DeGrom or Syndergaard..
They have the good young pitching, so all they need to do is fix the offense and their competing again

The White Sox tried that with Sale and Quintana. Didn't work. Eventually they have to trade them but if I were to guess it will be too late. Best to rip off the band aid.

Difference may be that the mets will spend for improvement ..

I guess the key thing is if they will be able to move a couple of older players like Bruce and Frazier

They need hitting more than anything going forward. Up the middle is honestly a lesser concern for them. Rosario/Cabrera/Conforto are not bad. Flores is weak at 1B

Cespedes LF owed 30 mil per til 2020
Wright owed 27 mil til 2020 (1B ideal)
Catcher looks open
Bruce owed 28 mil til 2020

So the OF feels set with Cespedes/Confronto/Bruce

IF: Reyez at 3B is a major concern. Rosario really is meh honestly. Cabrera 2B brings some power, Flores is ok. Think wright ends up here.

So they could use a catcher and a 3B going into next year honestly. Tomas Nido feels back up right now. David Thompson 3B at AAA lacks power. Peter Alonso at AAA looks like a masher at 1B. So this brings up some intrigue on what they do with Wright.

Top prospect at AA SS with wheels. I'm pretty sure he will be their guy. The match up is not there IMO. They need a top catcher and 3B honestly next year.

No, they need arms that don't fall off every year. That's the whole risk with building a team around young SP like they did, and exactly why Epstein & Hoyer chose to do it via position players.

Lester's not fooling anyone so far....all these .220 hitters are squaring up everything he's throwing out there.
