I understand how good the D was.

I didn't understand "keeping him as DC as HC" or whatever that was, which was followed by "HC? Give me a break!" which sounds opposite of everything else you were saying.

The D was great. Buddy was a great DC. They may have won again, but the 86 team lost McMahon, so the HC was not the issue. I am not one who thinks Ditka was a great HC overall. But Buddy sucked at it. He had great D talent in Philly and good offensive talent and couldn't win a playoff game.

But yes, with the talent they had, they should have kept winning. No question. They had a very good OL to go along with that D so any QB should have had a shot to win a title. Any but Flutie, that is.

If Buddy was the HC, that means he would have been calling the plays for the defense and the best defense of all time would have lived on.

It's my belief that Ryan would have been a fine HC for that team and the main reason is his defense would have led the way.

Yep, Jim got injured so that is a giant hurdle but it's my contention that that team would have had a better chance in this hypothetical scenario than they did in the real life scenario in which they were turned into a bend but don't break defense under Vince Tobin with Ditka as HC.

It's a silly argument especially because I've had to explain it so much.

While I tend to agree that it's probably no longer needed the time wasting part if negligible. Guys can always say no or just do a favor. Favors are not a waste of time. For instance, Eddie George could get his foot in the NFL door as a RB coach and make the same salary as his college HC job. Was the interview bogus. Absolutely and they all knew it but it doesn't mean it was useless to either party.

The Bear had their guy and were simply filling a requirement but that would have been the same situation with whomever they brought in or when. In that context, we no longer need the Rooney rule but the people who should determine that are the minorities getting these interviews... whether they feel their time is wasted or has some value.
Good points.

I have no dog in the fight, just pointing out your flawed memory (and most of the defense was the same in 86 as it was in 85)

85; best defense ever
1st yards
(4135 tya; 4.4 ypp; 4.8 ypp & 3.7 ypr)

1st points
(198 pa)

86; bend but don't break

1st yards
(4130 tya; 4.1 ypp...4.6 ypp & 3.4 ypr)

1st points
(187 pa)

Did you miss the part where I said number can sometimes lie.

This is that part.

I'm thinking you didn't miss that but here you are, listing the numbers? Okay Vince Tobin guy.

Ryan's defense was better, just ask any of the players who were on it and then on Tobin's. They all said **** the numbers, Ryan's defense was MUCH better.

Or ask anyone who saw Ryan's defense compared to Tobin's.

Except for you. (Just assuming you saw those years)

Why did we decide to change the coaching thread into a 1985 Bears thread?

BS. So, why waste your time posting here?
Post yes. Care about who reads what? Why? I’d be putting my hopes in actions I can’t control.

I hope there are 50 posters here telling me how wrong I was after a Super Bowl win in 5 years. Great.

So is the one yard run up the middle on first down, the constant screen pass behind the line of scrimmage for a 2 yard gain, and the throw behind the sticks on 3rd down out of the offense or is it written in his contract he has to continue the Bears tradition of this crap?

Well we had planed to have a thoughtful discussion on eugenics and the roll it should play in Johnson's quest to fill out his coaching staff but Montucky went and got himself banned.

I don't see the Bears skill players as anything special. Odunze was ok as a rookie. probably a bit of a disappointment, and Moore had a down season. Swift is a limited RB who rarely breaks tackles and Roshon is nothing special. I'd like to see a quality RB drafted and a speedy type WR.

Detroit prioritized both O line and offensive playmakers. The Bears should do the same.
I wr that runs a 4.3
