Can't really argue with that-after all, how else could we explain the continued popularity of reality TV, Twilight, and the election of George W Bush and Barak Obama to the presidency?

But Japan isn't better--after all if we're so simple-minded why try and emulate what we came up with when a good deal of us think it's not that good to begin with (the 2-party system)?

I thought I shared that with this group...ahh well, here it goes.

In Japan, Anime isn't pigeonholed like animation here was--where cartoons were considered "for kids only". Over there, it has pretty much been as diverse as live action films--with stuff like Hello Kitty all the way up to Hentai (pervert) stuff.

So, back I believe in the late 60's/early 70's, when the Anime industry was beginning to take off (Speed Racer, Astro Boy, etc.), there was a movement to create Hentai as a method to bypass the laws stating that genitals cannot be shown in japanese films. Well, from what I undersood, and again, this i just heard--it may not be true, they let the genital issue slide, but kept ome regulation saying that even in Anime, you could not show the act of copulation between a depictio of a human Male and a human Female. So, what one intrepid artist did was substitute human male penis penetration to demon or alien tentacle penetration, which was supposed to be a lot worse and yet somehow, that was allowed to be shown.

It might have been the classic "Urotsukidoji", but don't quote me on that.

Anyhow, it caught on. Thus perpetuating the "Japan: providing 70% of the world's most fucked-up shit since 1960" saying.

"Japan senior lawmaker: Americans are simple-minded"

...and the Japanese like to generalize.

Because he's a politician, and the people elected him, I hate Japanese people, now.

What a simple minded statement, papa san.

I just threw my Pachinko game in the trash, and burned all my anime, Kurosawa, Akira and Kyoshi, and Takashi Miike DVDs.

"Y mono" Spanish for "And monkey" as in "Oso y Mono" - "bear and monkey" - the terrible band Jako and I have.

And no, I'm not hispanic either.

Good, I recommend the Blu-Rays...especially for Kurosawa's movies and Criterion is doing an AWESOME job with those restorations and transfers.

I got all the Kurosawa Criterions. The Blu-rays, Yojimbo/Sanjuro boxset and Kagemusha, are gorgeous. Seven Samurai comes out in October.

Ran, from the Lionsgate Films/Studio Canal collection is also excellent.

Hmm might need to pick up the Ran (personally think it is Kurosawa's best). Was waiting for the Criterion, but with it not listed on their website so it might be a few years. Too bad my Criterion 1st ed Seven Samurai DVD is not worth the $100's it used to be.

Not to go tooo off topic, but the Criterion version of Black Narcissus is just incredible (and yes I know it is not Nihongo).
