Hope he's alright, whatever the hell went on. I enjoyed having a jump ball TE that had some reliable hands. Wish we got him earlier in his career.

Yes it is an assumption. Cant prove CTE until after someone is dead.

Actually yes some of them would because you have cause and effect backwards. They did not always make millions. The first NFL players got paid very little but still entertained us. They grew the game and in doing so salaries increased. So entertaining us is the first causal event. The millions took decades to materialize.
Not to mention you have other professional leagues lime the Arena League where players entertain us for a fraction of the pay NFL players make. So my statement is correct.

The average player got less than 6k in the 1950s and 23k in 1970 after the NFLPA fought for increased pay. The average salary in the US in 1950 was 3200. The average salary in 1970 was 10k in 1970. So they were about double the average salary of a US worker which is not really that significant. Any number of professions back then made double what the average worker got.
By contrast the average salary today is 54k while the average NFL player makes 2.7m. So the average NFL player makes 50 times more than the average US worker compared to around 2 times more in the 50s or 70s. There are few professions where you stand to make 50 times the average worker.
