It’s going to be Ross, because he’s cheap and will do whatever Theo tells him to do. There’s absolutely no reason to break the bank for a manager in 2020.

Wish Maddon the best. He couldnt out coach the FO mistakes. Theo isnt going to fire himself.

I think with the Angels firing Ausmus. He is going to wind up there.

I do believe David Ross is a strong possibility to replace him. He is a Theo guy and we all know Theo loves his guys.

I know a lot of people clamoring for Girardi, but I dont feel like he meshes well with Theo.

IDK about that. I'm pretty sure that Theo would make things work and there is mutual respect going on.

I do believe that it was just time to move on from Maddon. That is it and no hard feelings. They did talk about cycles and this one came to a end from both sides.

What Theo made perfectly clear, was they had a plan in 2015, they had the perfect manager for the way the team was set up in 2015, but things change.

As much as he can say that the Cubs had a top 5 ERA since 2015, top 3 this year, he knows developing pitching is his biggest problem.

Pretty sure whatever anyone thinks they know about how Theo does things are going to be surprised that he is also going to change.

Theo didn’t even mention Girardi interviewing. He mentioned Ross, a coach on t he cubs but didn’t name him and a coach that is in the playoffs

Ibanez was also speculated on MLBTR and Theo did state there is one more choice on a team (LAD) that he can not talk about right now.

Also he said prefer a experienced but that is not a requirement.

So that affects both.

Names tossed out.

Ibanez and Ross.

Now this statement holds value:

"We're looking forward. We're not looking backwards. I think, in some ways, there's been almost too much emphasis on 2016 and looking back. So, his connection to that team or even to some of our existing players will not be a significant part of the evaluation."

Epstein said Ross' history with the team is not necessarily high on the Cubs' list of priorities in this search.

Also

Mark Loretta is also in the running, but all Epstein acknowledged on that front is that there is "at least one" contender from the current coaching staff.

As always he is not going to give up his cards. But Ross is a outlier here.

Correct. It won't be Girardi.

Epstein listed a handful of concepts he hopes to achieve in tandem with the new manager:

• Trying to "make sure the whole is as good or exceeds the sum of the parts" when it comes to getting the most out of the Cubs' players. Epstein feels the talent on the field in recent seasons has not reached the desired results as a group.

• Cultivating a winning culture behind the scenes through focused and consistent work. When the Cubs add players from the outside, he wants the environment in place to be one that energizes that player, and not the other way around.

• Establishing more of a team dynamic and identity. Epstein felt "our routines tended to be more individualized" rather than team-centered. He would like to see more of an emphasis on group work going forward.

• Creating more accountability within the clubhouse. Epstein wants an environment in the clubhouse where "sloppy mistakes, mental mistakes aren't tolerated" going forward.

• Embracing a "grinding" mentality from Game 1 through the final game of the season, rather than expecting that things will just turn out fine by the end of the year.

Joe Girardi's name has been floated in external speculation, but Epstein wanted to limit his comments to internal candidates for the moment.

Internals are reported as Venables, Loretta, Ross.

I just remember Girardi being asked last year when he turned down interviews saying he was waiting for the right opportunity.

I remember that also. But that could also be a GM/Front office gig also. It happens.

There seemed to be some kind of understanding with Girardi, waiting for his dream job.

I thought Joe was still being paid, but his yankme contract did expire.

I just dont want Theo to be showing the fan base that he is doing the best he can and exploring all options. If the gut says Rossy, then hire the man, gives you a chance to retain Venables and Loretta if they want. You interview both of them for the job and they dont get it, they will be gone at first offer.

He wont be able to interview Ibanez til the dodger season is over, and if the guy does take an interview when his team is in the playoffs, its not a guy I would want anyway.

He said that he is doing internal starting next week. After that he goes external.

IMO if Joe says I want to run the Cubs Theo will do it. If not Rossy looks like a solid #2.

Theo also discussed experience of which Ross has none. I like Ross, but listening to his season ending presser left me thinking Ross has a larger hurdle to get over than other candidates.

Can't wait for David Ross!

I get why they did got rid of him, but man this is gonna be a big mistake.
This feels extremely sad and pathetic. Like shagging the town widow for Ryan Gosling in "The Notebook" pathetic.

Very much living in the past, trying to re-spark a moment desperately rather than use common sense.
