I wouldn't call his wear and tear similar to people his age. He doesn't depend most of his game on athleticism so I think he should be fine with that part of his game. I just think that Salmons probably has taken 2 years off his really age

Ben,
I disagree, Salmons comes up for a new contract at a much better time then BG.In 2010 the bulls will most likely have cap space and in this summer we are right up against the LT. Also, I think by the time Salmons contract comes up, we will have moved one of Kirk or BG, freeing up even more space. Lastly by them we should be a better team no matter what and JR might even be willing to pay the LT or we may have a new owner. Salmons will just be more fortunate due to being at the right place at the right time.

You disagree that they'll give him 3 years, $25 million? It's one thing to suggest that the Bulls might re-up with him; it's another to suggest that it'll be more than 2 years and serious money. I don't have the data on this sort of question, but if you could look up how many players have gotten 3+ year contracts averaging more than $8 million/ year after the age of 30, I'll be surprised if it's (a) a very long list, and (b) if there are many (any?) players on it who weren't considered stars.

Many people don't average over 20 points like Salmons have near the age of 30. His salary next year is around 7.5 million so your probably going to have to start somewhere around that vincity

Many people don't, including Salmons. He's averaged 18.7 ppg this year and that's far and away his highest total ever. 12.5 is his next-highest total.

Mike James might be an apt comparison. Averaged 20.3ppg/ 5.8 apg in 2005-06 (at age 30), after a career of considerably lesser production (although fairly decent per-minute numbers). James felt snubbed when he didn't get star treatment on the FA market, but wound up signing with Minny for 4 years and around $21 million. That low of an average despite the fact that 20ppg point guards were not exactly growing on trees.

Hey, if I'm wrong I'll happily raise a glass to toast John Salmons' good fortune. But I'm pretty sure that history's on my side with regard to $8+ million/ year.

Oh, and as to Salmons' contract needing to start in the vicinity of $7.5 million b/c that's what he'll make next year anyway: he's set to make $6.4 million next year and $5.8 million the year after that. But even if your figures were right, that wouldn't mean that Salmons could just expect a similar figure. Should Allen Iverson expect something near $20 million next season, or something near the MLE? ;-)

I was disagreeing that there is only a 1.7% chance that we sign him. He will likely have the right situation and timing to be resigned unlike BG's poor timing. I think he gets slightly over the MLE for 2-3yrs, more like 3 yrs 20mill.

Then you and I agree. I wrote in that initial email that he could still re-sign with us, just not for $8+ mil/year. And if he does that'll be fine, and if we opts out and frees up money for a big FA, that'll be fine as well. That's all I was saying.

I see us extending him this summer to be honest, especially after reading this.

This would be great. I think with the addition of a 2010 star player, we will be instant contenders. Especially if we don't have to worry about Salmons leaving. He would be a great 3rd option(He might already be a 3rd option on our team with Rose and BG).

More importantly, could any of you pick the shooter out of a lineup without that hat on?

Sure hope they don't have the death penalty over there, that would be cruel.
