“He’s such a valuable part of our team in terms of being a popular player,” Bowman said of the sometimes maligned winger/defender. “Our players like to have him in the lineup for sure, have him on the ice for sure. He makes a difference that way. He’s an intimidating force. We’d like to get him some more ice time.”

Really didn't see this coming after he was signed for a 2 year deal. That said I don't think Coach Q will play him that much more ice time.

Good work. Traded Campbell to skate Scott.

Am I stupid for thinking that the Hawks should just put Scott down at the offensive end and be a screen of sorts?

Somewhat because guys that are truly effective at that also have the ability to deflect the puck, and John Scott is basically only capable of hitting people. I think he is good to have on the roster, but I really only want him as the seventh defenseman.

The offsides rule tends to limit that sort of thing - I doubt he has the wheels to keep up. His skating ability is limited to staying upright while throwing bombs with his fists. (Not entirely a joke- that is a specific type of skating as well).

_______

And iirc that was stated by SB before dealing Campbell, so perhaps the depth chart will be different than anticipated.

Finally, as pointed out "would like to" isn't the same thing as "will be". For example, "I would like to win Powerball." - Which indicates a hope, where as "I will be winning Powerball." -which indicates some sort of delusional thought process on my part, if I were to actually mean it.

I'm thinking this is more of a good thing than a bad thing; it's not as bad as you guys are making it out to be. Sure, he isn't all that great at hockey, but his presence can/does make a difference.

Did ya notice how much of the cheap bullshit ended when Q FINALLY brought him into the lineup against Vancouver?

Now, with more cap flexibility to be able improve the defense and bottom six (or even slot guys in slots where they can be successful), Scott will work out fine as a 12th forward.

I think it is a good move...play him on the 4th line, and cycle him in on defense to spell our dmen a bit

Q barely plays his 4th line anyway, and he is someone who will protect our top players

I know last year he didn't play them much, but I seem to recall the 4th line playing a lot the previous couple of years. I think Coach Q not using the fourth line had more to do with personel than personal choice. That said I do like the idea of Scott being the 12th forward and a guy that could swing back and forth between in case a Dman goes down or needs a break in a game.

Good point...our 4th line was bad last year, which would lead to less ice time

:doorrofl:

Good response...

care to elaborate?

He can't play offense or defense, why would you want him to do both in the same game?

Because he has familiarity at both positions...

Also, god forbid there is an injury to one of our defenseman in a game, we have someone familiar with the position to drop back and cover for them...im not saying he should get 30 mins of ice time, he should get 4th line minutes, and play his role as enforcer

Didn't a month or two ago they say, they hope Scott can turn into a more complete player.

Neither of these things are going to happen so its fine. Keep him a part time 4th line player

Boy, I dont know about that one. I mean he's good to have around during the playoffs when they let a lot of stuff go but he's is a liability during the regular season. On top of that, the Jordan statue has more skating speed. I'd keep him, but have him as the 21st guy and pick & choose when to use him.

The pessimist in me says this is a stupid quote. It doesn't take size to stick up for a teammate, it takes toughness. If there are guys on the team saying that they want Scott around to protect them, it has a feeling of a kid that runs to his big brother every time he gets in trouble with a bully. Not good.

But in reality, the guys probably do like him (seems like a nice guy) and as mentioned in this thread- he definitely did make a difference in the playoffs.

As for more ice time- the guy needs to earn it. He needs to bust his ass to be a better skater if he's going to be out there with any regularity. Someone mentioned using him as a goalie screen. I suppose its possible, but Chara briefly proved that it takes more than size to chip in those dirty goals. Also, most of your screening is done on the powerplay and this team has a little too much offensive skill to waste a pp spot with John Scott.

I dunno, I'm pretty indifferent on the guy. Hope he can find some success, but I wouldn't bet on it.

i dont see the point in playing scott... Q only playes him for a couple min in the 1st and then doesnt trust him enough to put him back out there. hes a waste of space, that just makes the rest of the team work harder

This isn't really a fair judgement of Scott because of the play and consistency of the entire 4th line and some of the 3rd. This ought to change for this upcoming season and we won't see the top 6 so burnt out.
