they went from nash to scott. funny shit
Sather's still their GM -and he doesn't exactly have a reputation for doing sane things ... so it sorta fits.
I did read some material - from 300 Level blog today (it was posted a couple of days back I think) - about front office shenanigans with the Hawks, about how Stan was ticked off at Quenneville (and other things) -for not using the personnel provided (or something along those lines) - that to me said Scott all over it - as over the past season plus it was clear that Quenneville was not that big on using a guy like Scott in the lineup -or probably more accurately didn't agree with the philosophy of skating a goon -and tried jamming a square peg into a round hole. Scott was and is a goon, not a hockey player.
When you have a goon on your team and dress him, you cannot ever try skating 4 lines. The entire 4 lines thing is something I am not quite sure that Quenneville has ever quite managed to get. You don't really need 4 lines, if your top 3 are effective -but I've written that particular line before.
Trying to make Scott a hockey player, was not a particularly workable idea, but Quenneville tried and tried again. Stan signed Scott to a 2 year contract, and I'm fairly sure that came from a lack of communication between the GM and the coaching staff- as clearly last season, a guy like Scott didn't fit in the plans of the coaching staff. . . I do figure that maybe the Prez (marketing-guru) is basically Pulford v 2.0 -excepting one big fact -and that was that Pulford did play the game, and played it in the Original 6 ... so Pulford knew hockey (still does to a degree -but the line written about how a game passes guys by over time -is something that applied to Pulford).
IIRC Pulford had a pretty decent record as head coach in the 70's (I'm thinking with the Kings back in their purple and gold days). . . that's something that no one can ever say about the former Cub Prez (unless the Hawks sign him as a free agent and then skate him a few games ...which itself might actually be some worthwhile mareketing).
Anyways -Scott -well, his time with the Hawks seem to point to the validity of behind the scenes issues within the organization.
