long story short.

Why not try to obtain soriano from the cubs, try him in left...dh him here and there to give paulie a day off and move viciedo to 3b. With the pitching we have, our lineup could look like this:

De Aza
Kepp
Dunn
Konerko
Rios
Soriano
Viciedo
Ramirez
Flowers

Im bored so I am just throwing this out there. and no cubs fans.....he isnt going to require a top spec.

2012 was a blip on the way down. He'll go back to his regression this season.

Unless the Cubs eat 95%+ of this contract, for a minimal return (class A player, if that), then sure.

But he also is going to require more than nothing in return if the Cubs are eating up to 26 of the remaining 36 million dollars on his deal as they've reportedly been willing to do.

there is a way this would work, I wouldn't mind Soriano. I mean we all did deal with Juan Pierre in left in 2010 so Soriano wouldn't exactly be a downgrade from him defensively

Soriano IS on the market, and Cubs have stated their will eat most of his contract IF they get good prospects back in return. They are not just going to trade him and eat all that money just to get crap back. That would cutting off their nose to spite their face.

And therein lies the rub. There is a huge gap between requiring a top 100 prospect and the return the Red Sox got for Youkilis. I am not certain towards which end of the spectrum the Cubs are going to be at for a deal for Soriano, but it certainly is going to cost something of value if the Cubs are making Sori a 5 million a year player.

As far as making sense for the Sox lineup, Soriano would certainly help with power. I don't know if the Sox buy that Viciedo can handle 3B because you would have thought they would have kept him there in the minors if that was considered viable since that would have made far more valuable than he already is. The defense certainly takes a huge hit with Sori in left, Viciedo at 3B and Keppinger at 2B. The offense gains probably make up for that hit, but I am not certain that the costs in terms of assets (players and cash) in addition to the defensive hit make this a smart move for 2013 and beyond.

I'm interested. As Cubs fans could you name some guys you would want back for Soriano? I have some guys in mind, but I want to hear from you guys first.

Arms would be what I would be asking for, and while I would be very happy with Nate Jones I am not sure the Cubs would be going for a reliever or the Sox would part with him. Nestor Molina would make some sense since he has a decent shot at being a back end of the rotation starter. Jhan Martinez is an interesting arm as a bullpen option as well. Unfortunately the Cubs probably need guys that are off the 40 man roster in a deal, and so maybe some guys that are in the low minors might be the target over lower ceiling arms in the high minors.

Yeah, personally, I would be hesitant to do Jones, but I would be willing to part with Molina or Marinez if it meant getting a power bat. Soriano is old but I think he still has value with his bat, plus we have De Aza who can cover a ton of ground to minimize possible Soriano fielding ****-ups.

that would take a little more discussion, because if we dealt Santiago that would probably mean we keep Floyd, in the end I would probably pull the trigger on that deal when and if I felt the offense needed addressing

i dont think viciedo would be as bad as miggy at 3b. probably just avg. the reason for the move to the outfield was on the sox. they thought morel at defense there while still having vicedo in the lineup.

If the rest of the lineup can handle the defensive switching there is no doubt that the lineup would be improved, and would definitely help take some pressure off of Alex Rios have to be repeating his numbers from last year. It would be nice for all sides involved, but the question comes down to return. The Cubs are in a real tough spot with the very limited options to deal him, but if the Cubs are making him a 5 million a year guy that has value when the Cody Ross's of the world are making nearly 9 per year. It will be interesting to see, but I have a hard time seeing Soriano moved with how restrictive he is going to be in where he would go because I don't see the Sox offering anything of value in this scenario.

Doesn't his bat make our lack of a lefty bat all the more? Especially since he's not an impact bat any more.
