Take issue with style all you want, but to say he is a bad guitarist is ridiculous. Also, the self indulgent argument against improvisation is just weak. They have enough fans that is clear they are indulging more than just themselves. The people that are familiar can hear the story unfolding and participate in an exchange. They can hear the jokes, call backs, new horizons, teases, builds and releases in the music. Sorry if it just just sounds like spazzturbation to you. To the people that are versed, they can hear a story being told, or a plane taking off, or a roller coaster climbing that first hill.

Just cause people don't know shit about the music doesn't mean there isn't craft there. Don't have to like it, but its worthy of respect. Don't be the guy that hates on some art when they haven't bothered to learn the vocabulary of the medium/genre or really just don't like the culture around it.

Everything that is different looks like shit when you first see it, before you learn its vocabulary. Think of the first time you heard hip hop or heavy metal or country. Hopefully we all get the chance to experience something foreign and weird and get come to appreciate something that first seemed like shit on its own terms.

It bothers me that people can be so dismissive of shit that has carved out its own following in its own corner with no help from national marketing or distributors, solely on back of its own art.

I don't think a lot of people understand the purpose of jam bands. The purpose is the live experience. To be in the room and whip the energy up until the roof is about to blow the **** off. Which is the point of most arena music. But most bands just rip through static songs that evoke a static energy.

The purpose of jam bands is to manipulate that energy with intention. To direct it purposefully. To engage in an interplay with the audience where we are all creating together and exploring the unknown and generally trying to burn the whole place down. The songs are just vehicles. Its why they abandon them so readily. And the nights where the room finds the pocket... can't even describe it.

There's a reason why people see 100, 200, 300+ shows.

That said there is nothing less organic than jerry garcia trying to decide whether he would like to enjoy his acid or his smack while soloing for 20 minutes

I tell you, when fans listen to phish or jam music in general, the whole time they are imaging what it was like to be in the room while that shit was being played. If you can't relate to that than it makes perfect sense that it would just sound like endless noodling bullshit. Like looking at someones vacation photos. If you never been there, its fucking boring.

Yeah, there is a lot of unhealthy shit in that community. Trey had to go totally sober cause he got on the smack.

Someone told me the same about a methodist church camp. Don't be so chauvinistic about taste. Some people don't like hootinannys. You bring up a good point, though. Why ask whether other people like what music you like?

Bwahahaha...my dick knows more about music than you, don't lecture me on being unversed. The guy simply doesn't have the chops to be worth wasting the scant resources of an orchestra to put on such a production in my opinion. He seriously just isn't a good guitarist, simple as that, has nothing to do with style, but rather ability. Now, someone like Fareed Haque, that would be worth the time and trouble.

There's an Eagles fan at my local bar who thinks Trey is a better guitarist than Brian May. I laughed in his face.

He's gotta be trolling. I know these "better guitarist" arguments can get a little tense, but what was his rationale?

I didn't even ask. I just laughed at him and possibly ordered a pint of whatever he was having.

I moved to crispin dry after they added 8 grams of sugar to strongbow. I never liked hornsby's. There's a michigan dry cider called van der mill that is okay. They make an almond flavor if you're into that. Also uncle john's is somewhat good
Yeah, I'm trying to stay away from the ones they add sugar to. They taste like kool-aid and they go down so fast I might put myself into a diabetic coma. Will have to check out Van der Mill if I can find it in New Mexico.
