It bugs me still when the whole cabbie thing comes up.

Usually it's just some mindless prick, but still.

People believe the bad way before the good.

I was at Game 4 in NSH last year, and I was down by the glass for the warmup. Some Nashville fans came down with a poster with Kane's mugshot on it and something about a cab. Kane took it in stride; shot a puck at them. Everyone (the Nashville guys included) loved it.

I guess my opinion of him was soured by my time meeting him at the season ticketholder party. When meeting him and getting an autograph, I told him how much I appreciated what him and his teammates were doing for the team by getting out there and making themselves so available. I stuck out my hand to shake his and he said "eh, thanks" and turned his back to me. Just appeared to be rude.

A similar thing happened to a buddy on my hockey team who is close friends with one of Kane's childhood friends in Buffalo. When she tried to introduce Kane to my buddy, he completely blew him off. She even told him "not to be like that," but it didn't change the way he acted.

So like I said, just my opinion from myself and those around me meeting him. Maybe I'll feel differently in the future. I do feel it's because of his age and the things he's accomplished, so I don't really blame him...

That happens with a LOT of players though. Not everyone will have a good experience. They meet 100's of thousands of people. You aren't always going to catch them in a great mood. Most try to keep an appearance but even the nicest just can't sometimes. Or it appears they are "blowing it off" when in fact they really just want to be doing their own thing. Some of that is the age. I'm quite sure some have that same perception of Toews, Hossa, and any number of individual players.

I have met very few NHL players that EVERYTIME I talked to them they were 100% cordial. I have also only met a very FEW who were never cordial at all. IE Marion Gabborick, and a select few.

Hell once I met Salami and he was an ass but the following two he sat there and chatted for a long time. I can say 100% there is a mispercetion of Kane. I know this for fact. Other than you suggested he's still an un cooked egg as are a lot of them.

I completely understand how someone would have that impression just not with Kane but with ANY NHL Professional player. Although by experience the NHL Players are leaps and bounds ahead of other Sports/Leagues.

Do you guys really think it's possible to get to the NHL level without being cocky, arrogant, and sometimes overconfident? Most of the time, that is what separates those that make the big show, from those that don't. To be surprised that a professional athlete is cocky or arrogant is being extremely naive. ****, I couldn't imagine how much of a prick I would be if I was one of the best hockey players in the world. I'm already intolerable at times with my arrogance and ego.

That is what I was saying earlier, that it is hard not to be when successful at anything, no matter how humble one tries to be. Moreso when one is young and garners a ton of attention.

Toews appears to be not to be cocky, arrogant, but he seems to be the anomaly. Regardless, Kane's fine.

I look at myself when I was 22, nearly 30 years ago, and boy what a ****-up was I.

Just my opinion:

Toews has his swag, just like Kane does. You don't get some of those highlight reel goals and accomplish what he has without an extra-healthy sense of self-assurance, cockiness, whatever you want to call it. And I love it... part of what makes watching world-class athletes exciting and fun. At the end of the day, I think they both seem like hard-workers and good kids.

You'd actually be surprised he's more like they are describing Kane than Kane is.

It's funny unless they "know" the player they'll never really know. They'll, and I mean the fans, will formulate an opinion off the 1-2 minutes they may actually be around the athlete, and or what the media protray them to be.

Toews is a lot more like Kane in that respect than most from the outside will ever know.

That's why I said "seems." One never really knows, less they spend some time with someone, what they're really like.

Of course, my perceptions of any hockey player's (off-ice) persona are based upon what I'm spoon fed by the Hawks & NHL PR machine and the media, which, then, has to be filtered through my oh-so-subjective senses. LOL

The NHL still produces some of the most balanced professional athletes in the world.

In fact, IMO, I think they are the best but I have not met many other athletes from around the world.

What a refreshing thread. I wasn't sure what to expect when I opened up "Kane".

I love the kid. The ying to Toews' yang. I hope the both of them stay Blackhawks for their entire (hopefully long) careers. His wild side is part of the package and as long as he doesn't go Fluery - he'll be fine.

"Not a chance, not a chance" - one of the best lines ever from a player who just won a championship.

Didn't Mcguire ask or tell him to be good? And he said Not a chance, not a chance?

How would he eat those words? huh?

I believe Cory McPherrin said something like, "Stay away from taxi cabs."

Asshole!

Not a Chance, not a chance came at the end of his Pier Mcguire interview on the ice in Philly......

And Corey just as MOST of the Chicago Daily sports reporters should just not talk about hockey. They don't know a thing about the sport. The biggest idiot is Bruce Wolf and his impersonation of Pettit.
