:obama: i know he can close games...i meant that he was relatively bad at it this year....its an intentional hyperbole...every MLB closer can close out games

he was 2nd to last in the mlb in save %,14th in saves overall, and tied for 2nd in blown saves

ya i know i know part of the reason he didnt get as many saves was because he didnt have as many opportunities as some(because the cubs suck)...although the guy who led the mlb in save only had 5 more opportunities

and drew storen(6th in saves) and heath bell(7th) played on teams below .500

leverage index is a stat i really dont like..you're trying to quantify situational pressure...when there are so many variables to consider..

comparing marmol in 09 and 11 is a bit apples and oranges...im not going to deny that marmol probably had a better year in 11...but what does that actually mean? that considering his 2010 season, he's up and down? i suppose...

but that BABIP thing along with the velocity charts i linked speaks volume...marmol clearly has lost some "zip" on the ball

and he's not better than wood RIGHT NOW

Based off of what exactly is he not better than Wood?

Looking at their lines from last season, Marmol and Wood are pretty comparable...

Major League Leaderboards

The difference is that Wood is older and Marmol still has time to bounce back. Reliever volatility being what it is, anything can happen in limited innings next season.

marmol has less control than wood does...wood is more declining because of age and injuries more than anything else..but i still think he's our best bullpen pitcher..does that mean much?

no..i never said it did...but thats partly why i want to keep him...i hope he retires as a cub...

He's said if he's not a Cub he's going to retire, so it'll happen. One way or another.

I hope Wood doesn't get carried away with what he wants. This team isn't gonna be begging for a 35 year old reliever to come back for 1 more year in what's gonna be a terrible season.

I think market rate for a reliever of his age and ability would be no more than $4MM. I don't think they'll be willing to go too much higher than that.

I think Wood's just making sure he's getting market value, imo. He could've gotten 4x (minimum) what he got last season from the Cubs. He's making sure the cubs know he COULD sign elsewhere if they don't give him $3-$4M, imo.

I think anything less than $4MM is reasonable. More than that and they might as well let him go, damn the fans.

Theo's definitely shown he's got the long-term interest of the Cubs in mind, not the best interest of the fans...But I'd say $3-$4M is about right for Woody...and if someone offered him $5M, I'd probably match. Wouldn't go above that, tho.

I think they'd prefer to keep Kerry Wood, but not at all costs :D
